Right guys I have an issue at work. Its a difficult one so Ill explain a bit of the background first.

Right, firstly I got one of my old bosses a job here in Jan, hes come in as a Regional Director. I have known him for 12 years and he aint a bad lad really, a little misguided but all in all not a bad bloke. His manmanagement skills are somewhat lacking and organisation is none existant (DONT ask why I got him the job, Im asking myself that now!)

Anyways, we work with a women, who 1) is dog shit at her job 2) is bone idle and will do anything to skive! She has only been in wokr 44 days this year, due to time off for courses etc etc.

Well, since this old boss of mine has started she seems to be getting preferential treatment, she has 1.5h for lunch, she can take lunch when she wants, she leaves early, spends hours on the net, spends ages on the phone to family and friends, and generaly shrugs work off. Now, Ive mentioned this to my boss and he says all I do it moan (which in some ways its true) and dismisses it saying she works hard!

Its not just me though thats seen it, others have too yet the will not open their mouths. I get in early and leave well over my hours, yet if I leave 5mins early this bloke questions my "core hours" Its starting to eat me and I dont wnat to come into work. I am part of three who work on all the jobs who at the end of the day our stuff is the stuff that goes to the clients. We therefore are relied upon the most, this fat wench doesnt give info soon enough, doesnt goto meetings as she is scared etc, she is generally a waste of a human skull!

So, a couple of months ago I spoke to the Regional HR amanger and mentioned this and she said I should speak to the mian director. Its a difficult one as I dont want to feel like I am moaning especially on a bloke Ive know for so long.

Now the twist, I found out my boss has fed the pony on this certain female colleague at the weekend and she repayed with some

So what do I do? I am the most senior one in my role and therefore I am relied upon a LOT. I am in at 7:30am most days and leave at 5:30pm, yet some days its easy 8pm or later, with little or no lunch. This wench comes in at 9am and leaves for lunch at 12:00pm and then comes back mostly at 1:30pm then fucks off at 4:30pm, thats after phoning "momma" up in fucking Italy for an hour!

She is diabetic and fuck me does she play on it, so she has "special" treatment to go for lunch early, FUCK OFF YOU WASTER!!!

You can see im not affected by the fut ****, so, what the fuck do I do?

OK, without trying to insult you, it's your own silly fault for being so concientious and now you're jealous.

The fact is, it doesn't matter what other people do at work. I'd go so far to say that it's none of your business.

Get in at a normal time, take your lunch hour and then fuck off at the time you're supposed to regardless of what's going on.

I see it all the time with permie staff. They think that the company they work for A) notices that they work hard, and B) gives a shit.

Now, I can completely understand why you feel rightly pissed off. But it gets you nowhere. Stop being such a company suck-dick and start taking for yourself. Do less hours, work less hard. At the end of the day you'll have the same pay-packet and a lot more free time to boot :)

As Scouse says...don't worry about what she is up to.

Also companies hardly ever recognise it if you work your arse off. Just work your core hours and leave it at that. Obviously if you have a deadline to meet or whatever then work the extra hours cos they *will* notice if you miss those!

They also don't like it when people rock the boat by going against the flow (which is what you are attempting). Quite often it backfires and you end up being passed over for promotions / made redundant when things don't go well.

I get in early and leave well over my hours,

Fuck that — if you need to work more hours, you get paid over time. No overtime — set hours only.

"This need to go tonight" It slams pressure on me and I buckle too easy

The correct response is "I've worked hard all day, but I clock off at 5pm. If you need this finishing, I'm happy to stay behind so long as you pay overtime.

That way, the slackers get the shit - not you.

Spoken like someone who doesn't work in a corporate environment. There is no overtime pay for management in most corporates and there's usually a specific contract clause along the lines of "...will work the necessary hours to complete specific projects" to cover out of hours work. Its all very well playing the shop steward but this isn't the 1970s and he's not Red Robbo.

I take it that this Director is this woman's direct line manager? If so, then sorry, its a clear conflict of interest if he's playing hide the sausage with her and it needs to get back to your main director (although chances are, if you know this is happening, so does he, via the power of PA). You owe the guy no favours, especially if he's playing silly buggers by criticising your work hours (he sounds like a bit of a dumbass tbh). You don't need to do anything as crass as an official complaint, let office gossip do its job (see above the PAs are always the answer).

The other angle is the appraisal process; if there's any element of colleague appraisal there's your chance; if there's not, it might be worth a subtle suggestion to HR.

Failing that there's always photos in flagrante and blackmail ;)

2 things;

1) I'm diabetic. I take an injection when i have breakfast, lunch and dinner. If i eat a main meal, i'll do an injection. She may not be exactly the same, however it's more than likely she has her control like this (it's easier to control diabetes this way).
My point? She can *probably* go to lunch whenever she wants.

Years ago some people had 1 injection a day, it meant you kinda HAD to eat at certain times to avoid your blood sugar level going too low etc.

2) If she and the boss are shagging etc, you wont get anywhere with him. It's good that you contact the HR person, also if you contact the guy above your boss, you best explain that you have gone to your boss and he simply is not resolving the issue. He's giving preferential treatment and that's bullshit.

You *could* make a note (maybe in notepad) of the times she leaves. Although it cant be used as proof, it'd show the person you complain to that you are serious about all of this.

When we have seminars etc she has no problems staying for them and even though there is food she doesnt eat only has a coffee!

Yeah I'd bet she's taking the piss, but you'd never be able to prove that :(

If you go against your boss and this girl, it could mean you keep your job, but will get shit pay rises, never get promotions and work will be worse than it has to be.

The shitty thing is, if you get her in trouble, they probably wont fire her and you'll still end up being treated like shit :(

Question to think about is "am i even happy with this job? if i lost it tomorrow, would i be leaving a job i like?"

Sorry have to agree with Da Gaffer on this one.. Tom you have actually no idea about corporate environments once you reach a certain level.

The reason you are Management and you don't get paid overtime is that your salary is supposed to cover that aspect, also you receive other benefits not usually given to those who are paid overtime. Company car whether your job requires it or not, or if you are like me and don't drive receive extra bunce per month, Health care not just for you but for your family, extra days holiday. Not only that but if you are having a slack time at work nobody actually cares if you take half a day etc.

Eg: I work excessively long hours for the first 10 working days of the month (between 12 and 16 hours a day) and then it is back to normality (between 8.5 hours and 10 hours). During the last two weeks in the month I can take half day or come in a bit later or just work 6 hours should I choose, but it is my choice :).

Well then Darth can tell us himself exactly what is written in his employment contract, and that'll clear that up.

Myself, unless there is good reason, I don't work for free.

With respect to Darth's problem, I'd probably stick to a course of head down, do your own thing and don't let them screw you over. But that might be unbearable. Good luck with it.

In my case, I have to work some very long weeks at times in the year. My contract states that overtime is worked "by mutual agreement" (haha) but I don't get any overtime or official TOIL. I have worked enough hours in a week before now to put my hourly rate below the minimum wage. However today at work I have read a short story by Lovecraft, had my hair cut, played Clay Kitten Shooting and spouted some crap on various forums. I will also be taking most of next Friday off and not putting it down as holiday.

if its a large company or the work the bird does (or doesnt do) doesnt affect you then who gives a shit. Shes playing the system better than you, man up and skill up. If its a tiny company and she is hurting your payout then go at it tooth and nail imo. If you are good at your job then you'll find employment elsewhere if needs be.

If you're overworked and she's slacking, ask her what she's up to and if she isn't doing work related stuff, delegate some minor task to her. Then when she doesn't do it, you keep on hassling her about it. She will do it eventually. Then you praise her assuming she did a good job, or if not, point out what she could have better. Then you delegate another task to her.

Surfing the web every day all day is *mind numbing*. I know because I've done it for period of up to 3 months at an old job.

If she doesn't respond to being given real work, then take it to your boss and state in no uncertain terms that you feel that she is isn't pulling her weight for the time she is in the office, and that as a result, your workload is increased.

If she truly is doing no work, then the business will want to keep the ones actually doing the work.
