Fucking morons.

This lunchtime I witnessed a lorry driver practically demolish a street lamp, at the time there was no immediate threat to anyone ( i moved the plastic out the road) so i decided to report it to norfolk police tonight. On my way home I walked past the same spot and someone (I assume) had kicked the panel loose exposing the wiring. I immediately called 999 thinking how fucking dangerous that is.

Well fuck me if i dont feel like a child. The woman on the end was a total bint. She didnt let me explain why I had called now instead of lunchtime, regardless of trying to explain that there was wires loose and exposed she just kept saying "stop right there"

I ended up coming home and calling Norfolk police who then told me I should have called 999 if i could see wires.

I actually bothered to speak to someone and complain, still fucking fuming. The worst bit was when she said "You do know 999 is for life and death only, sir" What like someone electricuting themselves and....... oh wait DIEING.

I'd say it was an emergency. What if some kid had walked over and gotten themselves zapped.

Just another call centre at the end of the day :(
You say that to my friend who works on the lines for the ambulance service in london and you'd be needing their service pretty damn quickly yourself.

I only really know about the ambulance guys but their job is one of the hardestand worst paid i know of, i have no idea how my friend sticks with it.
Apart from the ability to recount amusing stories about Potatoes in Vaginas

I wouldn't say exposed wires was an emergency really. Its not like someone had just been knifed or shot...

Would you rather they dealt with the exposed wires problem or attend to someone who only has a few hours left to live?

There are certainly situations were exposed wires could be classified as an emergency.

999 operators are trained to make the decisions as to what kind of response is needed. They can simply transfer the call to the normal police line if they felt it wasn't that important.

We don't know what exactly happened but Sydrik was trying to help and has found it very frustrating. Its a shame it has happened but I hope it doesn't stop people from trying to do the right thing rather than the easiest thing (which would just be to ignore it).

Surely you should inform the company that owns the pole about the exposed wires?

Aren't they like bound to have to come and fix it or something?

I had a visit from Norfolk Police last night to actually thank me for calling them, apparently it was dangerous and the council had come out right away and repaired it. But only after the police had put up a small barrier around it. Turns out the wires were still live and exposed and according to the copper last night I was right to call 999.

I appreciate that they are trained to deal with time wasters but if she had given me 5 more seconds to explain I think she would have understood. My rant was more out of frustration that anything else but I am glad to see people can appreciate where I was coming from.

I do appreciate that and it's a good thing he has done.

I do think 999 get a vast amount of calls which they could do without and so if that call operator had just had 20 of them his legitimate call , but not necessarily an immediate emergency, may have been the last straw in a very long day...

Was it not on FH that I heard the call out to a big bright object in the sky? Turned out to be a full moon.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but it seemed the perfect place for this - BBC NEWS | Magazine | When are silent 999 calls cut off?

The procedures they use to deal with suspected calls made in error are killing people. On the other hand they receive thousands of them so how are they meant to cope?

999 is basically deteriorating in quality under the volume of calls :(

You know what you learnt here right?

Don't get involved, the street lamp isn't your problem so don't make it your problem.

Bollocks. It's apathetic toss-pots who contribute to making this country into the shit hole it is. What if some kid had poked one of the wires?

It's unfortunate that Sydrik had to put up with morons but he did the right thing.

we have a wire on our road dangling from one of the street lights, flaps around violently in the wind, when i called the council about it they said it was too high to cause any hassle and yet my housemate who is 5ft tall has to duck to avoid it when its windy o_O

I've been saying this for years now, why the hell do mobile phones need to be able to dial 999 without unlocking them? Try it now on your mobile, if it's not a slide or flip phone and has an exposed keypad you can dial 999, 112 and sometimes 911 without unlocking the keypad, which means you can accidently dial any of these numbers in your pocket. It's not neccessary and it's costing lives it seems

On a side note does anyone else want to get hold of that Maninder Pal Singh Kohli and make him digest every non vital part of his own body.

making a deliberate hoax call to 999 carries a mandatory 10 year prison sentance with no parole

bet that would cut the rate down :)

Had a huge cable dangling over our road a while ago, turned out to be an old cable tv link, but we didn't know that at the time. Police told us to call the fire brigade who came very promptly and took it down. More to the point they sent a fire engine with the sirens going which was full of gorgeous tall men!!!!!
