Little help please, using windows 8.1 for the first time, questions...

Why don't I have a shut down button next to my avatar at the top right of the metro screen, I have to put the cursor in the bottom right and have the things slide out and then shut down form the settings tab

And where is the search box gone that you used to get to by clicking on start, you know, if you wanted to get into dos mode

the thing you type stuff in is now "search" you go to the side of the screen and press the magnifying glass and type your shit in there.
It does the same thing, but also searches for stuff eg you type command and hit enter, you get command prompt. You type edmonds filthy homemade scat porn and it'll find your video filth.

You can always install classic shell which'll basically make it like older versions if you like.

With my version. You don't need a search box or icon. You just go to the main tile screen and just start typing what you are looking for and it does it for you. Very clever.

Yes but you must type into a box, you don't just have the cursor floating around and start typing?

You just start typing from the metro screen. To shut down, right click on the start / Windows button

To shut down you could always just hit the on/off button on your PC, job done.


*you might have to set an option somewhere, select what this button does blah blah in control panel. but as far as I know by default it is shut down.

There is a setting for hitting the power button, also you can set it so you just shut the lid down (laptop)

Lappy did a massive automatic update when I shut it down yesterday, and now the power button and search button are on the metro screen next to my avatar
