7 Wonders

Last week I went to Petra, one of the so-called 7 Wonders of The World (not that I agree with that list, but Petra was amazing), and it got me thinking; what are the Seven Wonders of the future? What have we built in the last, say, 50 years, that people will look at hundreds of years from now and think "it was amazing what they did back then?" I'm struggling to think of anything modern that will even be standing 200 years from now, never mind 1000 or more. Thoughts?

My vote would be the Forth Rail Bridge, not quite the last 50 years (1883 if I recall correctly) and should be good for another couple of hundred at least.

theres not much built recently in the UK that will last 50 years.

those islands in the middle east theyve artificially built with all the penthouses on.

I would say the ISS is a good candidate, but as its going to be dropped into the atmosphere and burnt to a crisp soon then thats a non-starter

They are already suffering huge problems, I doubt they will be here in 50 years.

Saltaire is pretty cool(and is just up the road from me), but that is a couple of hundred ywars old.

I like the look of Llyods of London, that thing looks great!

It was the tallest building in Europe for a while, it was a key building in London's urban regeneration of the east end and it's the only modern building (that and the Gherkin) that will probably still be standing in 100 years time. It's not special now, but the UK populous might look back with a romantic vision.

Look at the Twin Towers. Big, ugly, no soul, no charm, didn't fit with the surroundings, boring, badly designed in retrospect but America looks back at them with rose tinted goggles to the point that someone campaigned to put them back exactly as they were.

Seriously? Why?

Actually that's one of the few modern London buildings I can see ageing well; imagine the Gherkin or the NatWest Tower in a 100 years, and its pretty hard to picture them still being around, but I can picture Canada Square.

In fact there are very few buildings post 1970 I can imagine being around; as I think about it the only stuff that is going to last are the big civil engineering projects; the Yangste Dam, Channel Tunnel, Panama Canal, that kind of thing. Dubai will have fallen back into the desert/sea a hundred years from now.

Bah, what's wrong with the motorways in England?

As for the modern seven wonders, there are so so many to chose from; maybe the Channel tunnel due to how and when it was built or as previously mentioned, the Panama canal but that's more due to its significance in the Americas then its aesthetic design. As AGAIN already mentioned however, it's liable to still be around for hundreds of years to come so will be in the spotlight during times that people will be judging this kind of topic

The Panama Canal

The Suez Canal in Egypt

The Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan

The Millau Viaduct in France

The Chand Baori Well in India

The Bingham Canyon Mine

Nothing really equally amazing to the original 7 wonders, when compared to the timeframe etc.

A wonder should make you go "WTF? How is that even possible?!".

Modern days, this will most likely come from Dubai. Those guys are crazy enough to pull something off.

It is. The "New 7 Wonders" are:

Chichen Itza
Petra
Christ The Redeemer - Rio
Macchu Pichu
Colosseum
Great Wall of China
Taj Mahal

I've seen five of them and personally I think any list like this that doesn't include Angkor Wat is immediately suspect; the Christ Redeemer statue is actually nothing special tbh, there are loads of them all over South America, that one just happens to be the largest.

Lighthouse of Alexandria
Statue of Zeus at Olympia

Niagara Falls is a natural wonder. Like Mount Fuji perhaps?

Think the Taj Mahal and Niagra falls are more modern wonders of the world Trem; The Americas weren't discovered that long ago, and the Taj Mahal is not that old either when compared to the list Gaffer provided.
