How do I find out if the processor in a particular machine is capable of running a 64bit OS ?

I've been given some test equipment at work and some spare memory, so I was going to upgrade one box to 4gb but therefore need to install a 64bit OS to get the most out of it.

I downloaded CPU-Z thinking that might help, but I'm no clearer on whether the chip will support it. According to CPU-Z it's a P4 450 Prescott 775 90nm 3.20GHz.

Well the usual rule of thumb is that it will need to be a 64 bit processor to use a 64 bit OS :kissit:

According to the Intel specs it has the em64t so can access 4gb or more so you should be ok to go with 64 bit as long as the mobo is fine with it.

would i be right in thinking that an AMD Athlon 64 is a 64 bit processor?

Ahh come on, dont take it to heart. :(

The info on those processors is actually quite easy to get hold of.

But yes, Athlon 64's are 64 bit processors Athlon X2 64 is dual core.

For detailed specs you can pop over to Welcome to Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, AMD - Processor Homepage. I know the intel site at least has pretty good breakdowns of the chip features via a comparison table.
