Price has dropped to around £120 something that is unheard of after a short release time.

What's the reasons?

Garbage games released with it?
The fact it makes your eyes bleed after 5mins playing? I don't own one but I've been tempted a few times I've tried it around 5 times and everytime after 5mins I can literally feel the effect it has on my eyes.

Opinions?

Just got mine for £115 from Tesco Entertainment, with 10 quid quidco to come back and 200 extra clubcard points with a code. Just a shade over £100 in the end. Too good to resist.

3D has flopped.

There is only 1 game that is worth bothering with, Zelda. Which could be done without the 3D (it worked before!)

You nailed it with the eye strain comment.

People get it, play with 3D turned on for a few minutes, get eye strain, turn off the 3D. It's just a normal DS after that and not worth the premium Nintendo were loading on the price. Now that it's come down to a more reasonable price point, they may see improved sales.

Or it could just be that Nintendo have saturated the market and have nowhere left to go. Personally I think it's because more and more people are using phones/tablets/slates for their casual gaming.

This more then anything i think.

Handheld consoles like DS or PSP doesn't really offer much that phones/tablet's can't do.

Yep a good point on mobile phone gaming which gets better every year.

What were they thinking with the launch games though? Zelda and possibly that Resident Evil game are the only two worth considering getting at all.

They are dropping price to corner the market ahead of Vita. ( which singlehandedly pwns wii U as well ).

I'm suspecting that most of the dev companies saw this as a potential flop and just didn't want to waste money on it.

Alternatively they got handed a demo product, played it in 3D and suffered said eye strain and called it off there figuring "why bother if that's happening".

No point buying a 3d machine if you cant use it.. :)

Give it a couple of years until the technology is available and we will start seeing some amazing games on mobile phones. The market is there already it's just the tech that is needed.

What tech isn't there? Phones are already more powerful than any portable console we've had. It's the fucking controls. Phones aren't likely to gain a dpad and buttons over the years, so I don't see how we're going to get any good games on them.

For your consideration...

Looks like dpad and buttons to me. :)
I understand your point though. MOST phones don't have the controls.

The comment about Rovio is because they're the creators of "Angry Birds", one of the most successful games on mobile platforms at the moment. They make money from sales of the paid version and a hell of a lot of adverts on the "free" version.

There's a number of games that are starting to effectively utilise the technology on phones. I installed a free version of "Meteor Blitz" earlier today. That's an accomplished shooter with good production value. The downside (as you've pointed out) is the lack of "proper" controls. Touchscreen corners are okay, but can get fiddly.

I understand that part of the comment, but I didn't see any counter-point because Angry Birds is shit. If it was released on PSN or XBL hardly anyone would have noticed it.

Mobile phone gaming is basically taking flash games to the masses.

As I said give it a couple of years until the tech is available better battery/graphics/and I'm sure some genius will come up with a nifty control pas that you could plug into your phone. Mobile phone gaming is just starting in a few years it will be great.

Yep, and it makes a huge amount of money for very little cost. Add to it the shitty advertising and you have a gold mine.

Mobile devices will just get more and more powerful, we have already seen a few phones designed for games from Sony. Give it a few years and I reckon we will see a lot more from other manufactures.

I agree with you that the controls are poor on a phone but I still enjoy playing some old SNES and Mega Drive games on mine. All it is lacking is a decent control pad.

That's your personal opinion.

If it was a bad game it wouldn't be this popular.

How is the tech not already here? What a shitty excuse. Phones are fucking powerful.

And yeah, plugging a controller into my phone. Sounds fucking amazing and not joke-like at all.

Are you new to games or something? Since when do publishers care whether something is good or not? They care about what makes them money.

Farmville makes bucket loads of money through micro transactions. Yeah it's shite but loads of people play it and loads of people buy stuff for it.

I don't know how many play it, but they wouldn't play it or spend money on it if it were boring or they thought it were bad now would they?

I don't think either game is good myself, but that's still just a personal opinion.

Are you new to reading forum posts? How does that go against my argument of mobile gaming being a joke? If they just churn out awful shite that makes casual money, well that just supports my argument entirely.

A joke because you personally don't like it or a joke because its a licence to print money?

I think smart phone gaming is in its infancy, but so are smartphones to be fair. The controls are an issue to be fair, but then it is a problem that just needs some creating thinking to remedy. We have phones now that can run the unreal engine and run it well, and lets face it there is a huge gaming market to be had here, turning none gamers who must have the latest smartphone into casual gamers - and an awful lot of money. A generation or two down the line and I don't think there will be a market for dedicated hand held consoles unless they can bring something very new and powerful to the table.

You have to remember that we're discussing this in comparison to portable console market. Compare phone games to the kind of games we've seen on the NDS and PSP. Phone games really lack quality and depth. Zenonia is the closest I've seen to a "proper" gaming experience, but for an RPG it has no depth, for an action RPG it has mediocre combat, and of course the touch-only controls hurt it even more.

All consoles have shovelware, but phones only have shovelware.
