Principle is the same, electric impulses like that can be done, so even if fake, can be done.

On the matter of safe use, well, 3d glasses will f*ck up your vision anyway.

I guess holographics devices will be ready for everyone in like 10 years. The processing speed for the display of this kind of stuff is almost achieved and the technology to capture 3D content is already being used for the 3D movies. 3D television is just a small step on that direction imho.
