If i set the 360 to my TV resolution, the picture is shifted to the right and i end up with a black strip to the left. the right is then cropped off.
anyone else had this problem?

ive had to set it to a higher resolution than the tv to get the full image displayed, but im sure this defeats the point of a VGA cable.

Not entirely sure the answer, but why are you using a VGA cable instead of a component cable?

Apparently it allows DVDs to upscale and it is giving me a better image over component.

Your DVD's will be upscaled either way because the panel has a higher resolution than the DVD. I'm quite surprised it's giving you a better image than component though. Are you sure you're not comparing it with composite which is utter crap. Component is the three plugs, red green and blue - it'll give you a 720p output and should look very nice indeed.

Maybe not, but your screen will as it'll display whatever it has to in its own resolution. Whether the 360 does a better job of upscaling than the panel does is the question - I'd be surprised but I guess it could.

As to your problem, well that sort of thing happens with VGA and it usually needs to be aligned. Remember the good old days of having to move the screen location on CRT's, then LCD's would have an auto-adjust, then DVI did away with all that faff. There's probably an option in either your screen set up or the 360 options to move the location of the display.

you made me doubt my self that vga is better

it is definatly better. cleaner image and the blacks are black instead of dark blue.
initially i only verified it in mirrors edge where it got rid of some dodgy white spots and jaggy edges.
now ive double checked it on 300 HD-DVD and it is definatly better.

so there you go :p

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean the official 360 cable isn't duff :).

So id have to buy a new cable either way. techncially the VGA is at least the same quality, and theoretically better quality according to the stats. something about 1:1 pixel matching, better colour and the upscaling for DVDs.

different people say different things ive read. depending on their own panel depends on which one they prefer for picture quality. perhaps it is even down to the person choice of how you like it to look.

so i havent lost out :D

Yeah, to be honest it's been ages since I've looked in to that sort of stuff so I don't know. The one thing I would question is the upscaling thing as I'm not convinced the 360 would do a much better job of that than your panel.

This is the kind of thing you should consider when planning your A/v buying. DAmn impulse buyers!

Anyway for good dvd up-scaling invest in a ps3 if you can. Much better as a media player, dvd, BD, Cd -quieter than the 360 and much simple connectivity and better sound.

Fanbois stay out plzthnxbye.

That's a point, I'll be upgrading my set up soon and I'd quite like to get my 360 HDMI'ed. Am I right in thinking there's absolutely no way to do that short of scrapping it and buying a new one?

Google around. Technically HDMI SHOULD give a better image quality but in reality most people are saying its tghe same as VGA unless youre TV doesnt like VGA.

VGA is much better than component. VGA is also better than HDMI unless you are running 1080i. I was using VGA for ages before i got my better monitor

Re component having more vibrant colours, ive read that is due to some noob tvs that cant handle a vga input. i would say there is no difference for me.

Agreed and as I said earlier, VGA handles black levels far more effectively than component.
