Nice post calean, have to agree with you. Its all about perspective. making out your enemy as unhuman animals that carry out atrocities as part of their daily routine is nothing new.

Tierk, If they did make a film about Queen Victoria being some kind of monster I doubt many would care. There already have been some Indian films portraying her as a power hungry meglomaniac. Don't remember any flag burning demonstrations in London though.

I honestly doubt that the people who were demonstrating in Iran, fueled by the retoric from Friday prayer, have even seen it. With the current leadership I doubt many care what they think either. Shame really as I know many Iranians that are really nice, reasonably minded people.

In a society where you cannot question the editcs of the leadership for fear of your life, you cannot expect any resonable discussion to take place.

In all seriousness i am getting rather tired of people seeing racism in everything. Life is to short to be whining about a film that is made for entertainment if you really want to do something then try and stop the flag burning loons that live in your country tierk (ofc you cant because you live in a country where freedom of speech is not allowed)

I do feel sorry for anyone who lives under such a regime and i think we take a lot for granted, however people living there don't have to spout the usual rhetoric every time something even hints at being pro western (whatever) "everyone hates us waaah waah wah" no in reality nobody cares, i lost interest in the whole iraq/iran/middle east crap years ago, as did a lot of people, i am really not interested in a bunch of primitives beating their wives and marrying their sisters to be quite honest, there far more pressing issues at home.

In all seriousness i am getting rather tired of people seeing racism in everything........

I wasnt going to post on this thread again but....

Dude what are you on about? I lived in London for over thirty years and i have never lived in Iran. I just moved to Qatar which is nowhere near to the comparsion you are making. At no point in this thread have i said that people who enjoyed this film are racists.

All i have stated throughout this thread is that i would wonder what peoples reaction would be to a film depicting another race /culture /religion would be and i getting replies telling me about political correctness and xmas parties and Iran is a evil place to live.

I mean seriously what sort of reaction do you think we would have had from a film depicting jews in the way that people are portrayed in this movie? Nothing i bet everyone would be saying but its just based on a comic so its ok ? I dont think so.

You and other people on this thread going on and on about how bad things are in Iran and that i should do something about it wtf are you people on? I dont live in Iran and my expressing my views about this movie doesnt mean that i am in some way responsible for what happens in Iran or any other country for that matter. Its just a statement of opinion, which i believe the thread starter asked for with this thread.

You dont agree with my views fine but please allow me to have a opinion or is freedom of speech only allowed for a select few?

On a side note why was i redirected to CoC for FH before i could post?

And this is my last word on this thread.

My views

As a fantasy piece, I quite enjoyed it, nice for the soundtrack to go all rock at the right moments during set scenes, however I found the rest of the music (although good) too similar to Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. And I've always had a problem with green/sepia and blue tint camera shots, they've done my head in ever since Payback.

I found the weird animals/creatures a bit surprising, but it broke up what could have been a monotony of normal fighting.

Quick question about that Theron, the nasty political backstabber - why oh why would you take the coins with Xerxes' head on them (so clearly dodgy coin in the city states) to a senate meeting? Even if he hadn't been stabbed someone might have seen them and known he was a traitor. What a mug. :touch:

I like to think that Xerxes represents the 7 deadly sins in the film - all have those can be interpreted (or maybe mis-interpreted) in his actions or nature. Maybe I'm wrong but it's nic to think of it in that way.

Tierk - I wouldn't take what the film says personally as an Iranian; I don't think it was meant as an offence merely (as some have already said) as a narrative work 'bigging up' the baddies. And from what I can tell - and I'm no historian - the Persian empire was waaaaaay bigger than modern-day Iran anyways so maybe you see an offence where there is none. I'm not sure if I saw anything saying Iran is an evil place to live either.

It is interesting as a political note that Americans did not play lead roles in terms of the Spartans - was that an occasional nod to PC or a full-on 'let's avoid to look like Americans oppressing Asian-based cultures'?. Somehow Scots and Brits seem rather more suitable with their stiff upper lips and dogged defiance in those roles anyway - prolly cos I'm British and biased.

This has been a good thread to read, thx to all contributors - definitely agree with Crom, disagreement brings good discussion, though all too often on FH people continue bitching and thinking they're right when deep inside they know they're either wrong or aren't even willing to look at another person's point of view (and at least once that has been me).

Enjoy all
