imho,

as a historical movie, it has ... serious shortcomings.

as a fantasy movie however, i think it is one of the best movies yet.

some of the scenes i can watch 100 times again...

As with most Hollywood, you have to take anything the put up on screen with a Siberian salt mine.

Hollywood if you remember is the home town of the people that made U571 about an American submarine <facepalm> rather than British.

There's no point in looking for any real attempt at historical accuracy from the Hollywood gloss vendors. You just have to treat it as popcorn entertainment. If at some point there is a film with real bite and real attention to historical detail its a bonus.

I decided to leave 300 til I could get it on DVD. Its pretty much B or C list for me.

The 300 is, as someone else has said, based on a comic book, its not supposed to be accurate.

Either way, the persians were the "bad guys", whether you look at it from the stylised view of frank miller, or from the historical view, that fact remains.

You may not like that, being iranian, however, I dont see how you can make a link from a film that is loosely based on history, to a film like you described.

Calling the persians the "bad guys" is an objective observation formed from looking at the historical facts that remain from the time. Xerxes was invading Greece, not the other way around.

The "sense of general history" is about the same for both films, the action in braveheart is more realistic, the 300 is more fantasy.

Everything is overdone in the 300 as this is frank millers style, you could argue that its not iran or even persia being portrayed badly in the film, just xerxes.

I would love to see what peoples reaction would have been to a movie made with the same level of "fantasy" but with say a historical moment involving any other race /culture or religion.

The comic is a loose version of the battle and events surrounding it. War of the Worlds is set in America using real locations, oh noes the Aliens are feeling discriminated against.


The fact there was only 300 Spartans tells you something about it. You are all missing the point and I have had this discussion with Dukat loads. The Persians being shown as Evil, the big Elephants, the Rhinos they are all part of the bigger picture.

Leonidas sent home his friend because he was the greatest story teller, to judge the movie you have to watch it as a story being told by someone that was there. So in order to inspire the troops and force the politicians to act, he created an image which is way over what it actually was, the God King being 12 foot high, the Elephants being the size of the moon. All of this was to instill in his troops that the 300 stood against things that no man could possibly stand against and they kicked some ass.

Next time you watch the movie, try and watch it from someone that enjoys a movie, rather than trying to pick up on some so called non existent attack on the Iranians.

Gladiator showed how to make perfect mass szenes.
But anyhow they wanted to make a film like Sin City....and so it was.

I loved the movie, as the movie it tries to be, it dont try to be a documentary, just based on Frank Millers comic.

But according to some sources, only 2 spartans survived the battle, the one who was send home to tell the story, later commited suicide due to loss of honor of surviving where his king has died, the 2nd was killed by his mother for destroying their familys honor.

This is a film based on a comic, Alexander was a crap movie based on real events.

Its was a pretty bad film, pulled out of the mire of mediocrity by its special effects, and stunning set scenes.

It drew heavily from what had gone before it, a holywood blockbuster film by numbers, but entertaining none the less.

Never before in reading reviews and opinions on film have i seen someone completely miss the point.

The story of 300 (as Frank Miller portrays it) is a narrative, told by one of the actual Spartan soldiers who were there, not based on historical fact. It is a legend, a tale to be passed from one generation to the next.

Ultimately in telling stories everyone exaggerates to make it more thrilling/gruesome/terrifying etc.

This is simply the case with the movie, the Spartan soldier (who is the one telling the story) is exaggerating the points to make it more enthralling. So the elephants were humongous, the 'ninja zombies' were most likely from eastern asia and looked strange to the spartans (skin tone and facial features) so were depicted in a scary way.

In no means is it some slur or insult on race, it's merely a spartans view on the enemy they faced.

And that for me makes it more brilliant.

Comparing it to Alexander is silly, because one's based on a soldiers view and the other is based on history's view. I'll let you figure out which one's which (hint's are above)
