2900 XT 512 mB Vs 8800 GTS 6xxMB

Which one should I get? I can't find any reviews past may ~ and the drivers on the ATI's must be better now?

Have two 8800 GTS Sli'd and it rox. Drivers seem very stable. I got the BFG's from Overclockers, decent price and they shop anywhere

that's crap , they don't design games around any specific card (exception being PPU's), not even shaders are hard coded on the gfx cards nowdays
They do however test games on various hardware configurations which may/may not be nvidia based solutions so games may have a very slight bias as performance is tested on certain hardware configs.
other problems are due to drivers, and Ati have a hell of alot better driver support than nvidia (ati release drivers every month, nvidia... every blue moon if that)

But back to the point in hand, i would get the GTS 640Mb simply because ati are stopping support for the 2900 in the near future
If you are planning on running a crossfire/sli rig i would go with the 2900's as they scale better (that said i wouldnt go x-fire i would get a single ultra for a bit more money)

They are cutting their losses really, it was never intended to compete on the high end, and mid range they are losing out on the consumer market as it needs more volts.

AMD plans to launch Radeon HD 2900 GT on October 8th at US$199 while HD 2900 Pro continues to be in limited supply at US$249. The existence of these 2 cards are just to get rid of the R600 stock that didn't attained XT speeds before RV670 comes along in November. However, HD 2900 XT, GT and Pro will reach EOL by end of October so the lifespan of the two new cards is really short. Radeon HD 2900GT will sport only 240 stream processors instead of 320 and a 256-bit memory interface instead of 512-bit for the 2900 Pro. HD 2900 GT card uses 256MB of GDDR3 memories while 2900 Pro card is able to use 512MB to 1GB of GDDR3/4 memories. Both cards are clocked at 600MHz core and 1.6GHz for the memories

That coupled with the fact they are launching their new chip (RV670) in November so they will be wanting to shift stocks of the r600 asap before launch

AMD is preparing to launch its new Radeon HD 2950PRO (RV670) chip on November 19, according to sources at graphics card makers. The company recently notified graphics card makers that design verification test (DVT) samples will be sent out at the beginning of this month and AMD will start producing a batch of 1.5 million chips in the first week of November.

The Radeon HD 2950PRO will continue to adopt the R600 chip structure. It will support DirectX 10.1, Shader Model 4.0, PCI Express 2.0, UVD and CrossFire technology. The chip also features built-in HDMI, HDCP and 320 stream processors per GPU.

The Radeon HD 2950PRO will come in two versions, Gladiator and Revival, with Gladiator adopting 512MB GDDR4 graphics memory, a GPU frequency of 825MHz and a memory frequency of 2.4GHz. Revival will adopt 256/512MB GDDR3 graphics memory, a GPU frequency of 750MHz and a memory frequency of 1.8GHz.

AMD declined the opportunity to comment on this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

AMD to launch RV670 on November 19

Far as games go it beats a GTX in some but loses horribly to a GTS on others so its really down to what games you want to play.
If you are aiming for a GTS 320mb, get a HD2900 as it can be easily overclocked to XT speeds

Well i've been looking at the 8800 GTS, GTX and Ultra, just upgraded my PSU, only needed to plug in 1 cable to the motherboard and the PSU was installed.. But anyway..

But i'll be waiting to after x-mas to get the card a bit cheaper. I'm just a cheap git.... and prices drop fast..

Hmmmm checked a few sites, think i'll go for ASUS 8800 GTS 320MB after talking with a mate that works for intel, his words where over 264mb on GFX card today sometimes don't increase anything, and in some cases it might even lower the cards performance due to the architecture.

And checking tomshardeware he seems to have a point the 640 getting lower rating than the 320.

I wouldn't touch the 2900XT, the power requirements are worse than an 8800gtx but anywhere from 25-50% lower performance in 99% of games. ATi is a real bad buy at the moment, the card doesn't deliver anywhere near enough performance per watt.
