As i'm modernising all my gaming equipment I was thinking of replacing my shit 18.5 inch with something bigger (without a damaged screen to boot). I was thinking of a 24inch with a 2ms responce time.

But I was considering is that TOO big? It seems rather large for a desktop setting.....

Any experience with larger monitors and how playable they are would be appreciated.

Lol.

I roll with a 28" as my main monitor, it definitely isn't too big.

How far do you sit from it? Desktop or wall mount a bit further away?

I still use a Dell 2405FPW and it's excellent for everything I do. I sit about 3 feet from it. I might well go bigger for the extra desktop real estate. A res of 2560x1600 vs 1920x1200 = 33% increase in both dimensions. Yes please.

I also use a Dell 2405 and I've had it for nearly 8 years now I think, 24" is the minimum you should be considering for a desktop.

24" is perfect I think.. I'd say anything bigger than 26 then you gave to sit at least 5 feet away from your monitor.

Lol yep, the 33% increase in each dimension in this case equates to ~78% more pixels on the bigger res and an extra ~56% of physical desktop real estate, so saying "33% bigger" is a bit misleading.

I forget what I paid for the 2405 (Ch3t? I think we got them at about the same time from the same guy on ebay...) but the current 30"er (the U3011) from Dell is going for about £940. I don't know if it's a good monitor but it's a same brand comparison. And I want one. :)

£650 ish I believe they were at time.

It was great at the time though, I could play my wii and 360 on it via the component. Best connectivity options, great price (they were around £1000 direct from Dell at the time), and no better monitor on the market for at least a year. I remember a great one from BenQ was the next best then.

That guy must have made a fortune at the time, bulk buying from Dell direct with a massive discount, selling them for a profit, he was selling around 10 -20 monitors a week at the time!

Went for this in the end http://www.scan.co.uk/products/24-v...920x1080-2ms-300cd-m-300000001-speakers-black

I like Viewsonics policy if there is so much as even a bright or dull pixel on delivery they will send you a replacement.

Now my £80 slightly damaged and shit quality Acer jobbie can be relegated to secondary moniter status and my other office grade Viewsonic for the netbook :D

Its started to look like my teenage bedroom again, except monitors don't take up almost the entire width of a desk anymore :p

I've got a nice LG 22". That size is perfect. My desk is only 2ft 3 inches wide - any bigger and my eyes would be destroyed.

I wouldn't listen to anyone saying the "minimum" you need - it all depends how far away you are. For 2ft 22" is perfect. If anything, it's almost a little too big if you're PC gaming and tend to lean forward. It's different if its for a console as you tend to sit back. 3ft distance for 24" PC is prolly poifect too.

It's worth thinking about seriously - if your desk isn't big enough, you'll ruin your eyes and your gaming / work experience will be scheiss. Good for watching movies though :)

I have the same 24" Dell 2405 as the others here and it's wtf awesome imo. what throws me with current monitors is that the sub-24 are all dirt cheap, and the above-24 are all hella expensive. was looking at a 27" LG the other day and it was more than twice the price of it's 22" cousin of the same brand 0o

Well I am all setup and I am this (where the chair is moved forward about a 30cm) far away:

I suspect I might be a more than just a smidgen to close, as TDC mentioned about leaning, i'm a leaner....I don't even realise i'm doing it!

Yes that shelving is perfectly safe, rock solid, just appears to have been put together wrong and has always had a lean to it.

That was me

Monitor looks shiny :D What background is that ? Was hoping it was a screensaver before I realised it was your desktop.
