20k for a car

Pretty sure in my new possition with work next year ill be given a company car, the current guide is around 20k - so what would you get given the choice?

However its goto be on the approved list so nothing weird or strange hehe.

My current taste is for a family sized car (had an Accord then Mondeo out of my own pocket before and would like to keep that kind of size)

Guessing some kind of BMW or Audi?

Audi A3 2.0 TDi S-Line Quattro.

That weighs in at around 20k, well made, well specced, economical, loads of grip, great seats.

Looks great too.

Golf GTI. Also, the new Civic Type-R will be out by then, which looks pretty decent as well. If these are too sporty/not big enough, then the new Mondeo will be out soon, which from the Paris show pics is looking like a fine car.

It may be worth forgoing the car and getting an allowance, so it doesn't hit your tax code.

That way you can buy something second-hand, still nice, and not get your arse taxed off you.

DaGaffer in agreement with Bodhi shock!

I take Tom's point about taking the allowance rather than paying the tax, (I did that when I bought the Z), but I think that depends on whether the car is expensed or not. I gave up my company car because I'd decided I was going to get the train to work and just have the car for fun, but if you actually use the car and the company pays petrol, there's still a lot to be said for taking the tax hit; spiralling petrol prices make the petrol allowance pretty valuable, and the best thing about having a company car is the lack of hassle; no repair bills, no insurance bother etc. NB. The GTI's not bad on C02; the VW FSI engine is nearly as good as the equivalent diesel.

Possibly a Mazda RX8 £21k for a new one, but could probably pick up a 6 month'er one for under £20k. Still fairly rare on the roads plus has won quite a few awards over the last 3 years

Go for the Honda can't beat Jap cars for craftsman ship.

Had my P reg Honda since 97 and its never ever broken down/had anything wrong with it. I am getting the new Civic Type R as soon as its out, i could get a Imprezza but every fucker has one now i mean i see more women driving them then men now!

Then again Audi have some damn nice cars now could you get the RS4 Quattro? man that car is awsome saw one the other day race an imprezza off the line. They look great too.

Well you can, they're called German cars. The build quality in Jap cars is shocking, OK they never go wrong, but the interiors are made out of melted down lego blocks. They're also tedious as fuck. Even the Skyline, which is proper rapid, still manages to bore the tits off me compared to an M3.

But 20k will get you a Golf GTi. End of discussion non?

So at least when you are sat waiting for the AA to come in your German car you are sitting in comfort looking at a great interior(BMW interiors are shocking).

I am driving a VW Bora V5 at the minute, and all I can say about the service given by the local VW garage is quite possibly the worst in any garage ever and that includes Dave the Paedos garage.

The attention I was given at the local Honda garage was amazing. German car dealerships are too far up their own arse to give a shit anymore, and BMW's/VW's aren't exactly known for their reliability nowadays either.

I have to say the new Golf GTi looks a great car, if only you didn't have to deal with VW to get it I would be tempted.

Honda/Jap all the way for me (apart from an Audi RS4 which I am still trying to not buy).
