But the SFX on the trailers/posters look woefully out of date and poor, are they really that much better on-screen?

Ending was shit. Blue sky and still water my ass, they should all have died in a fiery maelstrom of brimstone and fire.

I've now watched this.... dear god it was long. It was really really bad as a disaster movie, it was brilliant as a comedy. All those people dying in the CGi fest, the bad acting, the fact I was cheering when main characters died or nearly died. Armegeddon and Independence Day are safe as the defining modern day disaster movies. Whatever happened to films like Towering Inferno where you cared what happened to the people?

I really hated this film, just threw in as much cgi as they could, most of it was completely unnecessary but it was just a "hey guys look what we can do" kinda moment. Shit plot, shit acting, really annoying bits in it;

like at the end when they're about to "collide" put the engines in reverse and then the collision count down starts going 10m to impact 20m to impact. If it's getting further away then its not really an impact anymore.
Also the fact that the planes suffered no turbulence or any problems from the pyroclastic clouds.
Just seems they should spent more money on developing the plot/cast than cgi imo.

Y'see. I think you (and everyone who posted like this) missed the point.

What on earth were you going to see the film for???!

If you want decent plot, go watch a decent film. If you want to watch lots of people die in amusing ways whilst the cast go on an improbable rollercoaster ride, watch this.

You know, before you even get in there, that it's going to be a piece of shit. If you weren't expecting that, then I have to say that it's your own fault!

Whilst I agree that Dennis Quaid is watchable (like John Cusack), The Day After Tomorrow was the same film.

Random shit unbelievable story. Stupid characters. Special effects.

2012 was just Day After Tomorrow on steroids. And the director pretty much said as much...

I watched this the other night and it was utter shite, i was expecting it to be utter shite. I've decided to rename it as 'FFS' because there are so many scenes where I uttered those words - probably the same scenes others laughed at.
