2010!

I dont know why, but the year 2010 always seemed so cheesily futuristic to me. Back when I was younger 2010 was always the date they used for the corny space drama's where everything was covered with tin foil, aliens roamed the streets and robots did everything for us.

I guess I just find it kinda sad in a way that I'll soon be writing 2010 on cheques & forms, boring things that shouldnt even exist in such a far out and snazzy age :(

Where is my tin foil covered bleeby thing with flashy lights!! There's only two years to go until its supposed to be out!

I know it is really snazzy now with all of our high tech gadgets, but somehow its still so down to earth - people worry about mortgages instead of alien invasions, they still go to work in something as mundanely boring as a car instead of a tin foil covered space ship with layzors, and we still havent even got to mars yet!!

I guess I dont know what I'm trying to say, I'm just saying it :D

Also, I just wanted to make a thread so I could post this in it:
:freddyfm:

:D woo!

Yes, you missed the whole "its not here yet but its so close already" thing I was trying to get across :p

Unless we have a revolution within a revolution (and what with the economy as it is atm, thats even more unlikely than usual) things will still be largely the same in a couple of years I would imagine - I hope I'm wrong, and when I get into the army they give out tin foil covered space lazey beams with flashy lights and crazy sound effects, but I expect it will be something akin to the standard assault rifle we get at the moment.

Surely 2 years isnt going to change much?

Actually, the mars mission is going well :p They found life which supports..

Asparagus

Not even kidding..

EDIT: I'm personally waiting for 2020, nanites should be perfected by then, ontop of them having started on the human/machine changes. Should be a interesting 12 years in science.

You also need 1.21 Gigawatts of power...slightly more than available in your average domestic power supply...

2010 will be when the progress of the human race starts to go backwards, it won't be the begining of a golden age sadly.

With a bit of luck you don't even have to think about 2010. Some people believe we gonna end our existence somewhere in august when the experiments with the LHC start.
Or maybe that brings us somewhere where you can find your tinfoil covered stuff already... Who knows lol.

I read that. Personally, I'm not so sure that "man made" black holes are going to be a good idea. If it goes wrong, we'll vanish instantly. *Hopes to be living in 2009*

There are already black holes all around us.

I had a £20 note in my jeans pocket and its not there now. So must have disappeared down a black hole.

Edit: For you students out there, a £20 looks like this:

(If you cut it out of your VDU screen you'll get yourself a free £20!)

I forgot about the collider black hole thingy, that could turn very ugly.

Quite fittingly I was on a plane to CERN when this thread was created.

The LHC is not going to end the world. A summary is provided here. To summarize the summary:

The LHC won't produce anything that hasn't already been produced billion of times in the upper atmosphere. The upper atmosphere has not been destroyed so we can be sure the earth won't either.

The LHC is one of the largest most expensive scientific experiments ever constructed. The public need to be informed about it but it seems that its easier to sell the news as "The LHC might kill you" rather than "The LHC might be explain lots of fancy things about the universe"

Sept/Cade: Believe it or not, I've read the stuff about it being safe ;) But you know, human-error etc. I'm honestly hoping they unlock some stuff doing it, would be nice to see what a black hole actually contains (It can't all just be null/void) and see if they can send a camera through it or something. Meh, one day we shall use the power of the magical black holes :(

getting banged in the tower sounds painful Oo

oi oi!

lol i know what you mean tbh 2010 we should all be wearing white spandex suits and barberella makeup and have ray guns and stuff dammit! look at all the futuristic films everyone is tough, packs a weapon (preferably a laser), works on a distant mining planet and smokes!

we're not allowed to smoke, anywhere, mining of any sort will probably be banned soon under health and safety regulations and your not even allowed to carry a metal nail file in public let alone a laser!

this future sucks tbh i want my money back!

No chance, they'd never get him past the huge line of Japanese and American tourists at the front gate....

Though rep'd for stating British law about unlawfully reproducing/defacing the Sovereign's image - nice law that.

There is no such human error in all universe that would lead to the creation of a black hole at this time. But we getting close to it :)

That doomd00m shit about those black holes being created by the Hadron are bullshit. The fact is, that even if it creates black holes (which is far from certain), the black holes will be only a few particles big. This means that G_earth >>>>>>>>>>> G_black-hole so earth's gravity will tear it apart before you can say "Cool!".

Yes...but...

Think they'll make it bigger?
think some scientist goes apesh*t?
Think something goes "horribly horibly wrong" and they feed it too much energy?

And also, Tohtori oldie goldies:

When testing the nuclear bomb for the first time, 50% of the scientists thought it wouldn't work and the other half thought it would end in a chain reaction that would destroy everything.

And they pressed the button.

Black holes, particle acceleration, bio fed robots....someone will f*ck up.
