FFS ! This country's gone Health & Safety nuts. What happened to proper bin men who got up at 4am, did their days' work and just got on with the job ? Bin men used to be strong ! They used to whistle. Sure, they made a load of noise when you were trying to sleep in, but they knew the rules, you knew where you stood, your rubbish was collected every tuesday, you gave them a couple of quid at Christmas, and kept em happy. Job done. Now they've got weedy little shites doing it, whinging and whining in case they get their gloves dirty.

I can see the next market trend in garbage cans: a mechanism to grab hold of the two fingers dragging it :>

You know, in oz, adelaide to be exact, they get around such menal tasks by having trucks with automated arms that lift your bin and dump its contents in the lorry. all you have to do is put out your bin on the side of the road before collection day, of course such a simple idea could never be done here

Dammit we are so behind in this country, come on degree so i can move back, oh to be on noarlunga beach again!

The country went to the dogs a long time ago, really getting pissed off with rules and regulations about what I can and can't say in work!

Thats what they have in the part of the UK where I live too. The trouble is that with old country roads its not all easy to have a completely automated system and the bin men may have to move a bin slightly so the automatic arm can lift it up.

Actually this is completely different to smoking ban.

1) Smoking is an unnecessary act which damages the health of others around you.

2) Lifting bins is a necessary act for the job so any harm incurred because of it is understandable.

Of course this doesn't apply if you are working by yourself.

If you think of it that way, yes.

But in essence, it's nanypolice changing things to "better" things and like i f*cking called it, people start complaining when it effect YOU.

I could do the whole "well driving cars is an unnecessary act when there's public transport and harms my air!", but, that'd be silly now wouldn't it ;)

I had a really good laugh a few weeks back.
My mom 63' had an accident a few years back where she broke 3 vertebrates in her back. now reasently she applied for "Handicap transport" and got aprooved.

so anyway,
She agreed to go visit her sister in another aprt of Jylland over the weekend.
so she ofcause packed her bags "thursday" and booked transport to the Trainstation with "the handicap transport" so Friday while at work "my old job" I suddenly get a phonecall from my mom "upset" if i could quickly come and fetch her so we could hop a bus to the station in time to catch her train. Confused i ofc asked if she had missed the handicap transport ? And I swear to god i wasnt prepered for the answer.

It turns out the van had come on time to pick her up, and when she walked up to the van. the driver had reacted very oddly and inquired how she planned to get the suitcase into the van? turns out he "the driver of a handicap van" is NOT allowed to handle or LIFT custormers bagage due to work health ethics!

I swear I've seldom had to fight of breaking into laughter as much as when i heard this.

so He basicly told her to A lift it into the van herself, or B get someone els to do it for her. ofcuase this being around 10:00 am she coulndt find any naighbors and he wasnt going to wait for me to come, so I jumped on a bus "thanks to my old boss" and fetched her and we made it in time for the train :D

and btw the suitcase wieghed the Back braking amount of 4.5 kg's \o/

I know a bin man, he gets just over £30k/€37.5k ayear. Starts at 8am (the council won't let him start earlier as it wakes people up) and finishes at 1pm (unless he pulls a double shift which is worth double pay).

Nice work if you can get it! For that money with little/no training they should be able to pull the fucking bins with their teeth :p

Well it's true. This is the same thing. Worker health bladiblaa.

I said it's only a matter of time before you find something equally ridicilicky to complain :)

Its not the same thing.

The same thing would be to not allow ANYBODY to pick up something heavy. There are plenty of jobs where you have to do some physical labour and you have to train and pay people accordingly. This is a simple case of people not being trained/paid to do something and then using health and safety as an excuse.

I believe the current health and safety law is that you must have lifting equipment if the object weighs over 32kg. And you need proper training if it weighs over 20kg.

3. Wanting someone ELSE than yourself to drive and throw out your heavy garbage is an unnecessary act which damages the health of the person you want to do it for you.

Sorry, but your logic does not compute.¨

EDIT: The "necessary part of the job" is only relevant as long as you don't take counter measures.
2 Years ago, working in a bar, it WAS a necessary part of the job that you was willing to work in a smoke filled area, at least unless you hunted down one of the few bars that already had no smoking.
And I am sorry you can't see this, but it is excatly the same. I agree 100% with Old.Tohtori.
It is a matter of people health issues, and while it USED TO BE NECESSARY, it does not HAVE TO BE NECESSARY, and thus if you was one of those pro-smoking due to "health reasons", I agree that you should stop the freaking whining and live with the world you wanted in the first place.

Look at my post above.

Both are rules changes to a job description/requirement due to health reasons.
This time those who was "pro-smoking ban" are just on the receiving end (as are those who was against the smoking-ban) of the rule change and finds out that it aint as fun this time around.
Live with it.

I think there's probably too much whining on this thread (definately by smokers) but also by the people opposed to the bin men change..

If I filled my bin with lead, so I couldn't actually physically drag it, should I expect the binmen to struggle with it in the morning when they have another 2000 bins to empty. Now what if everyone did this?

I'm fairly sure that most people throwing rubbish in their bin won't ever need to worry about this rule. It's the people abusing a household bin by throwing stuff that should be disposed of in a different manner in them, then expecting someone else to sort it out.
I also imagine that if it takes 3 fingers to move it, you'll still have your rubbish removed by them. It just means when some twat does decide to take the piss there's actually a written law (because without one of them your hosed these days, and just get sued by the tosser) that means they can tell him to piss off with his bin full of paving slabs and get rid of them in a sensible manner.

It would be like complaining at the cleaners at your work if they told you that if you kept shitting on the floor instead of at least trying to aim for the toilet, then they would stop cleaning up after you. Would you also look shocked at that attitude, since they are after all being paid to clean the place!

It doesn't mean that some of the silly, i'm not allowed to lift the disabled woman's luggage idiots shouldn't be rounded up and shot ofc. But it does work both ways.

without going into a long a detailed rant post,
I'll jsut say that it's funny as hell how it's often the same people who bitch and moan about the developing police state trend that will in return demand just that when it benifits them.!

examples could be WTF is UP with all these CCTV!!! and Speeding camera and and!
Freedom of choice ..bla bla bla!!! Oh but wait, no hold on! I dont smoke, Lets have a state legislated BAN! yes you heard me BAN! nono! it's not for my benifit nooo think of the poor witresses and barmen! what ? they dont want one?! nono they are just confused! they'll learn to like it! and live loong and prosper!

it's a recurrent have your cake and eat it fenomina de' Europe atm

sure, as an ex-smoker I enjoy the nonesmoking in bars, but thats for selfish reasons only, and I've never been any big fan of the ban and I'm still no fan off it. and I'll happily visit a smoking bar so my friends can have thier cigs while we'r drinking, after 2 beers and 3 ciggs in my face, i cant tell the difference anyway, and am preatty obliviouse until the next morning. :p

.........they can tell him to piss off with his bin full of paving slabs and........

This brought tears to my eyes as i remember we redecorated our house in London many years ago and the poor guy who used to collect all the rubbish for our Mews, dishing out kinds of obscenties before he got to our door and as he tried to drag away the tonne and a half of trash we were putting out every day.

Ended up dropping him fifty quid as he used to give me some right evul looks everytime i used to walk past him on the street.

!

why do they do that where i live then? i live in middlesbrough and if they dont have those trucks where you live, it must be a right fucking shite hole.

whos deciding the force needed to pull these things anyway? i can pull lift and carry quite a lot on 2 fingers. so if i can drag a brick filled bin so can the binman?
