rr your the IT guy and you dont know what your changing to? :)
Anyway, what speed is the leased line? Be wary of ADSL as its not garunteed bandwidth like a leased line. The stated ADSL speed of 2MBit is what speed it COULD achieve, not what it WILL achieve.
Also, dont get BT Openworld. Get ADSL from easynet of Demon.

VPN

Depends.... our WAN which i look after, were atm running the largest site on a 256k leased line, a 128k leased line to another branch, and then the smallest, runs on a leased 64k line, ive been looking at putting it all on a VPN, and then getting an little extra for internet access.. VPN i dont know much about but atm its a little expensive/akward as most companies vpn products arent compatible, but its probably the way im gonna take mine.

As the proud 0wner of a phat aDSL line at home (2mb) and a not so phat 256k LL at work (I too am an IT Mannyhair). It all depends on whats on the end of them and how many ppl are going to use it. If your hosting a webserver then forget it. If you are running exchange then you have to get a fixed IP for the DSL line as some DSL products are not.

BT will not give any ISP any kind of promise over reliability or time to fix a problem. The ISP's have no control over most of the dsl circuit so if summit goes wrong you have to wait for BT to fix it and as there's no guarentee it will be fixed in a week, let alone 4hours like most LL ISP's.

On the other hand. If you have a few ppl in the office, pop3 email and no bother if it dies then go for the Adsl and save a few bob.

/me gets RSI

we run SBS and exchange on an NT server and the leased is 64k, i know u wont get anywhere near the 1mb on ADSL but for the price its got to be better that a Leased line.

All the needed equipment is installed coz of our current setup, and we have a fixed IP.

I just wanted to see what other peoples reactions where

Needless to say it r0x0rs :D

Pings of 40-60 in all fps games on BW servers. DL varies so much depending on time of day and where the server is and you can really see the difference between servers with phat bandwidth or not. Touching wood, so far now outage either :)

Upstream it's capped at 256k/s whatever package you get.

How come?
1. I felt the need for speed.
2. I was so fed up with the world wide wait.
3. It wasn't too exensive, £117pm, paid in advance.
4. I do a lot of research at home.
5. My firms paying for it.
6. I am the IT manager for said firm :D:D:D:D

Becasue he's not as cheap cunt that will get BT Openworld and expect it to be shit hot <come on, internet access from BT? :) >

And yes, i know that most ADSL producs are run via equiptment in BT exchanges but its not actually a BT Internet access product, which is what counts :p

Actually no you wouldnt. As JANET is the name of the network, not the name of the peeps who RUN the network, which is UKERNA :)

:p The pings I get are solid though. No PL or lag at all so the numbers are immaterial.

lol @ TDC

Thought this might interest some. I rang around today getting quotes on a phat lease line for the office. (More stuff to put online :))

2mb, priv circuit. 24/7 support. 1:1 contention: No bandwidth restrictions. 98% or more SLA. 4+4 service.

UUNET. Setup £5000. Annual £20000
Demon. Setup £3000. Annual £22000
Clara. Setup £1000. Annual £10000

What's with Clara to be so cheap? Anyone works or worked for them? Spill the beans, lemmo know. At that price I'll get two of them if it all checks out. (1 for a game server or two?)

seems too good to be true m8.
there's prolly a catch :(

however, that was just my black an evil heart whispering to me....I'd go with clara [untill I found out just why they're so cheap *grins evilly*]

Our entire network is based on static leased lines. A proposal was put forward to convert the branch links to ADSL (would save a hell of a lot of money), but in the end we chose to stay with leased lines because they are reliable. ADSL is not. If something needs to perform 24/7, do not get ADSL.
