Ewo it's nearly birthday time and I need a new monitor my 17" shitty crt can't go above 60hz at 1024x768, so now I'm after a tft.

Basically I am on a bit of a budget so we're look at around 200 -230 quid MAX. Preferably below 16ms and a good contrast ratio. Would like few dead pixels as possible!!!!

If you dont want dead pixels try and get it from www.aria.co.uk

For 15 squids ontop they do a dead pixel check and only ship you one without any.

For that sort of money perhaps a 17" tft would be better. The viewing area is a full 17", and therefore only slightly smaller than a 19" CRT and you'd be more likely to get a decent response time. They almost all support resolutions of 1280x1024.

The features that complement the excellent panel specification of the ProLite H481S-B make impressive reading. It has a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 and accompanying the ultra fast response time of 8msec is a contrast ratio of 700: 1 and a brightness measurement of 300cd/m². The height of the display can be adjusted through 110mm and the screen itself rotates for a landscape or portrait-viewing mode. Flexible inputs (1 x VGA & 1 x DVI-D with cables included) reinforce the position of the ProLite H481S-B as the professional 19" LCD of choice.

google is your friend!! :D

(oh ok so its £70 more than your max price big deal :p )

Hi moomin

MicroDirect have a Samsung SM913N on special offer for £198.28 inc. VAT exc. delivery.

  • 19" LCD
  • 1280x1024 / 75Hz
  • 8ms Response Time
  • 700:1 contrast, 300 cd/m2 brightness
  • 3 Year Warranty
There's no special dead-pixel guarantee, but for the price, and given Samsung's reputation, I'd say that was a good deal.

Kind Regards

Yep, it's a nice flat panel. I got it for myself in june. No dead pixels. No blurring. The 8ms responce is great. It is not bad at showing 1024x768 too, as I have a crappy gfx card, and can;t run UT2004 @ 1280x1024.
The only downside is no DVI.

That Ilyama does indeed look nice, can anyone rate how 700:1 contrast and 8ms response compare with other TFTs, is that good ?

I may soon join TdC in his wootness.

Check out the LG kit at Overclockers too. Mine was cheap and works just fine for games, 12ms response. Theres another thread here somewhere on this subject.

there's also a (very) similar iiyama that's a tad less expensive, with the only difference (that I can tell) being one colour less available and a different stand.

also, my mate tells me that LG are indeed very nice. iirc LG = phillips, so the build quality should be pretty decent.

aaaaand finally....you're more than welcome to join in my wootness club Xane, just no spunking on the hardware ok? :)

Hi xane

700:1 contrast is indeed good for such a monitor, as is an 8ms response time. It should be said that response times are a funny business, it's essentially the time it takes for a pixel to turn from one colour to another, but some manufacturers rate the change from black to white, others from shades of grey, but regardless 8ms ought to be fine for gaming and such (4ms is presently the fastest out there, and even that's very new).

Kind Regards

This one ? Seems to be the same specification, I might have to go for it as the Dabs are out of stock.

Hi moomin

Same monitor as linked to above, albeit slightly different price. Yes it appears to be very good, as per Teren's comments. DVI would be nice but, for me at least, it's not a deal breaker.

Kind Regards

Jonty

P.S. You could indeed sell the game on eBay or the likes, it's the latest in the series, although perhaps provided 'as is' (i.e. just the disk) :)

having never used a DVI driven monitor I'm not rightly sure. a regular VGA cable seems to do the thing nicely enough imo. I expect it's much like the discussion on being able to see/hear the difference in a high or medium spec video or audio cable.
without googling the only thing I know that DVI has over DSUB is that modes and times are communicated better, and that comes with a big "iirc" :)

Hi moomin

I think this probably is around the best you're likely to get for the money, so I really would not worry about the lack of DVI. For me, it's merely a 'nice to have' rather than a 'must have'. The rest of the monitor's specifications are very good, which is really what matters.

Kind Regards

Looking at the specifications the H481S is 300cd/m2 brightness and the E481S is 250cd/m2, other than that I can't see the difference. Looks like availability is the main problem, obviously a popular choice.

There can be only two, one Master, one Apprentice.

Seriously, this screen is mega-wootness, I'm sure TdC can cope with more than one minion, he has plenty of shoes to lick clean.

Obivously those Dutch posties aren't as speedy as the the British ones, from the amount of spooging he's been doing on irc I think we can assume moomin has his as well.

Evil-Minions-R-Us (a.k.a. Scan) actually delivered it the next day (last Friday), but my teenage stepson was under orders of extreme laziness to not answer the door, so it arrived yesterday, and is now set up and gleeming black in its evil wootness, I sacrificed a spare 12" CGA monitor in its honour.

It is said that Lord Plagueis was killed by his apprentice as he slept; weak, helpless and in front of a puny Samsung 17" CRT.

:( I hate you all :(

in fact, it's a well known fact that dutch posties only deliver large-ish packages when you're not at home and thus can't accept them :/

That's a good price for a good specification, and it looks like only £6 for delivery.
