Besides, after delving past Maths A2 into F.Maths A2 mental arithmetic was never ever used. Accuracy becomes very important and calculators thus become essential.

Balls. I have no idea what F.Maths A2 is but we had calculator free exams at uni. You should have seen the panic that brought on with some people.

If technology and advancement has presented us with a far more accurate & quicker approach of handling numbers then why is it so essential to be 'uber great' at mental arithmetic and being able to recall formulas off the spot?

That's a lovely story you told us there but if I told you I could whisk out a calculator and get an exact answer quicker than you could get an estimate, would that my approach any less valid (infact more valid - as you only estimated).

Computers & calculators are so common-place now-a-days that requiring people to be good at remembering and 'estimating' certain techniques isn't so essential.

And you would have exercised your finger, I would have exercised my brain. Mental arithmetic is exercise like any other. And the point is, I can do it. I didn't have a calculator on me (my phone was in the car), but I could still do the exercise; a scary number of people couldn't.

You'd be better off approaching lateral thinking with problem solving exercises than mental arithmetic.

In fact, I can not see any benefit for lateral thinking in doing mental arithmetic. Lateral thinking is concerned with thinking outside of the book; breaking regular patterns of thinking and assessing different approaches. Mental arithmetic is using an algorithmic process to calculate basic numerical processes.

Besides, after delving past Maths A2 into F.Maths A2 mental arithmetic was never ever used. Accuracy becomes very important and calculators thus become essential.

Bollocks. There are loads of different ways to do a calculation in your head, its precisely because the human brain doesn't work like a calculator that this is so. As for "it was never used in exams", that's just a sad indictment of the motivation behind todays teaching; who gives a fuck whether its used in exams?

Some people forget that learning useful things in favour of irrelevant shite/forgetting pointless mathematical equations that never gets put into practice is actually better for everyone.

(Yes I know it's not TOTALLY irrelevant but it's not every day useful stuff unless you work in a very specialised area.)

Since the last time I did maths as a subject, I have never since needed to use anything more than the absolute basics. This is the same for most people I know. But yeah, shout down people for not remembering something that's totally not needed for their life, it makes you look super smart.

More important question is;

Why do you feel that someone not remembering something you do remember, without placing any emphasis on what you don't remember and they do, is basis for calling someone stupid or infact a retard?

What is your reason to do so? Do you feel the need to seem better for this little fact of knowledge? Do you have a need to be better then the rest and is it simply compensation for having a limited skillset?

Yeah, psychology is a b*tch :D

Am I the only one here that actually still uses a lot of fundamental GCSE/A-level maths?

People will happily do this time and time again, then when confronted with the same situation with roles reversed, completely forget. The point is, different people have differing levels of 'needs' for certain tasks they've learnt throughout their lives. In this thread people are having a disagreement about shape in maths, in another thread on the front page people have belittled those who cannot work or do anything for themselves. In the grand scheme of things, one is much much worse then the other but the bottom line is, everyone has a limit by which they'll ignore small things others don't know before they start thinking...what the hell?

I think we will need to agree to disagree on this one.

In my opinion, the intellectual stimulation etc. you get from doing mental arithmetic in your brain is peanuts compared to tackling some problem solving questions; deriving equations, solving them etc. etc. etc.

True intelligence or 'un-retardedness' doesn't come from knowing the formula of something or being able to multiply pretty numbers in your head, it comes from lateral thinking and being able to test and reason with methods for problems to decide what is most appropiate etc.

wrt mental arithmetic, my view is that it should be part of the standard 'toolkit' of every adult. just like you expect people to know how to spell and write/speak properly, i think its reasonable that people can do basic arithmetic in their heads (to sense check things, not get fucked over for a little mistake). its nothing to do with 'true intelligence' or 'exam intelligence' or anything like that, just sheer practicality

You come on here starting these controversial threads knowing full well it will turn into a flame fest.

I think Laz should be reported to the mods or maybe even the rockers

Did state I was a little brain dead when I posted. WE old timers get these moments of extreme unclarity.

you youngsters will just need to put up with our lack of memory and........damn. forgot what I was going to say.
