Hi pcg79

I had a lovely Samsung 17" CRT monitor and I literally couldn't give it away. I tried selling it locally, ringing charity shops (no-one wants electrical products for safety reasons) etc. Sadly it ended up at the tip, but at least it will have been recycled properly as there are a lot of nasty materials in many CRT monitors.

There are now a few places, such as Computer Aid and Computers for Charities, both of which put your old hardware to very good use. The only catch is some require you to pay a postage fee if you cannot drop the stuff off in person, and they can't offer you any money, but at least you know it'll be going to a good cause. I'm not sure if they would accept just a monitor but if you can't sell it and are feeling charitable, it might be worth a try.

Kind Regards

Shame that Jonts. I bet there are thousands of PC users in the UK that have a crappy old 15incher running at 1024x768 within an eye bleeding 60Hz refresh that could have used it but just didn't realise how more enjoyable computer usage can be with a good VDU. My mum has an original Gateway 17" hand-me-down that must be 10+ years old now, I can barely stand looking it at for more than a few seconds as it flickers away at 60Hz but she just doesn't seem to notice.

Makes me sad to think how little my 19" Samsung CRT that cost £200 about 3 years ago is worth now. It's a damn fine monitor with a beautiful picture so maybe I'll give this to my mum when I get my dual TFTs when the prices bottom out (if ever).

I've given away a 19 inch Mitsubishi diamdtron and a 21 inch Dell trinitron in the last 6 months, and very few people wanted even them...

i threw away 5 17 inch monitors just over a year ago too, couldn't shift them at all.

How uneducated/blind is the general computer-using public to believe tft really is better than crt? WHY BUY ONE? :(

I had a lovely 19" Iiyama CRT, but started getting envious of the 19" TFTs mulling around that could match CRTs for speed and brightness at a fair price.

My mother said her friend's son, who she owes a favour, needed a 19" monitor and asked if I had one spare, so I went and bought a replacement 19" TFT to release the CRT for her, later on she claims he wants a TFT ! Like who is going to have a £300+ 19" TFT "spare" ???

So I'm left with a spare 19" CRT that no-one wants, fortunately my father downgraded his 15" TFT back to a CRT as he does a lot of photo editing and can't get the correct colour match with the printer on the TFT, so I fobbed the 19" CRT off onto him.

I had me a 21 inch monitor at one time. Was humungous. One of the first of it's type. Took a fork lift truck to pick the damn thing up. Believe me I could just about pick it up but because the weight was too far infront of me it was a hell offa job not to fall over. It was either fall over or my back would go :) . I loved the damn thing though. Blew up on me during a thunder storm. Replaced it with a 22 IIyama monitor. Bigger but lighter. Lets face it though these whopping monitors are old hat now. They take up a huge amount of desk space. My desk is about a metre from the wall and yet the back of the monitor is being supported by a load of books ontop of a small chest of drawers. Bloody hillarious really but it sure is a cracking monitor. Give me a TFT one though for sure. Would add to the room space for one thing ;) .
