Guys,

Ive got a Netgear DG834UK 108Mbs router and a WG111T wireless dongle (also 108Mbs)

the problem is, the PC which the dongle is in only connects at 54mbs.

any hints on where to start looking?

I have downloaded the latest drivers for the 834 (no drivers for the WG111T)
I am using Windows to control the Wireless Networks.

It is most likely just be a signal power/interference problem. All 802.11 kit tries to negotiate the highest data rate, then steps down if that can't be maintained.

The simplest (and probably least helpful) thing to try is move the router closer to the client, and ensure line-of-sight between them.

You could also go looking for interference: Bluetooth, microwave ovens, neighbours' wireless LANs, DECT phones, TV resenders, (anything else in the 2.4GHz band). You could also try changing the radio channel you're using, to 'move away' from an interference source.

The other thing to consider is, if you have _any_ kit on the WLAN that is causing the router to 'downgrade', i.e. an old 802.11g client card, it will cause the entire WLAN to downgrade to match it.

I have this set up, well almost I have a 834GT router, but sounds similar.

I had the same problem, but I think I kinda fixed it by going into the router set up, wireless settings and setting to auto 108Mb and then changing channels till it worked. edit - or could have been g only, just play around with those till something fixes it.

TBH in the end I got totally fucked off with the WG111T that I stopped using it. It constantly dropped and crashed the PC it was on. I reckon a decent wireless LAN PCI card is a much better way to go.

The router on it's own is brilliant though. I still have a laptop and a Netgear MP101 that attach wirelessly through it and it is very stable, usually going weeks without rebooting.

I hope that helps a little :(

Laz, I had the same issue with my Netgear router, an 834gt. Went over for support on the Netgeart support site. Turns out 2x54=108Mbs. I checked this out elsewhere - it seems credible.

My parents have a 108Mbit router, it only allows 1 specific channel when in 108mbit mode. I can't remember what channel it was though

I ended up binning my DG834GT due to it being a pile of wank and not working right towards the end, for some reason it couldnt manage any more than 20k download towards the end

If I remember, you need to change a setting on the wireless setup from a&b to 108 only, then the dongle will talk at 108mb instead of 54g. (side note, going to 108 only forces the wlan to run on channel 6)

Also echo Rubber Bullets sentiments on getting rid of the usb dongle, they are not worth the effort, invest in a PCI card (or pcmcia if its a laptop)

I only ever use USB dongles for fixing someones computer when at my house, means I can get internet access for windows update without having to pull network cables out and re-jig them around my room, or in some cases having to pull their machine apart to fit a NIC
