BBC History have done a list of the 'Ten Worst Britons'. Do you agree with the list? There's one on there that smacks of serious political correctness, although I'm sure you'd agree with his inclusion if you're Scottish ;)

A couple of them them were pretty weak I thought, there must be loads more that are worse. What about Harold Shipman? Or some members of the paramilitary?

Here's one from my old home town: Linky.

...nice, eh? (The horseshoe & Gallows are still there.)

I'm sure the British branch of the Rothschild dynasty must have a produced a few top ten hits: Linky

Napoleon had 'met his Waterloo.' Nathan [Rothschild] had bought control of the British economy. Overnight, his already vast fortune was multiplied twenty times over.

Thomas Beckett??? He was the famously martyred Archbishop of Canterbury who had the top of his head hacked off because he didnt give up cash to the greedy crown - how exactly does this make him bad???

"Who will rid me of this pestulant priest!" etc.

Winners are never popular and this was just the latest in a series of uprisings by the Highlanders - any English commander with a brain knew the Highlanders had to be taught a lesson this time or they'd just end up doing it again - it probably saved a lot of english lives but historians arent very practical.

Calling it genocide, how very Scottish of you. As has been pointed out on these boards before, 20 years after Culloden and the Highland clearances, Scotland was the powerhouse, the intellectual capital of the Empire. Hardly a genocidal act. Bonnie Prince Charlie was the real villain of the piece; the last in a long and appalling line of Stuarts, who, with one possible exception (Charles II) were very bad for England and Scotland. Of course fat unpleasant Hanoverains don't make for as much of a romantic story as pretty boy Eurotrash princes.

It wasnt genocide - nobody tried to wipe em out as a racial group - it was suppression of an unruly group who had repeatedly caused wars.

Same thing happened to the Germans after WW2.
