Well according to the National Maritime Museum, ratings had no official uniform until 1857, they were given cloth and had to have their own kit made from it however they liked. That's probably why you had a hard time finding a picture of a midsipmans uniform on the net - there wasn't one.

Well it was pretty much at the discresion of the captain, and many tried to uphold some standards - I've also got a few books (urm well PDF's) about the battles from that period and nearly all of them have some form of uniform, but pictures are kinda limited. (mm thats actualy backed up by that link)

From what I've gathered it was typicaly cream trousers with a white shirt and waistcoat - then a dark blue penguin jacket (long at the back) with a single row of brass buttons (3 on the cuff) the collar had a simple white patch to signify the rank.

Its all really interesting stuff - well is to me :) cant wait to RP this character.

Its a custom game :) the world is based on the Amber books, the dice system based on The Riddle of Steel and an interesting purpose designed magic system

Right found one while looking at old oil paintings - hell this one even matches my description :) but is a bit too young lol

and around 18 is hardly a little boy :touch:

TBH the dice mean naff all to me, I just want to drop the crappy day-to-day life i have and be something else for 3 hours a week :) and boy does this character have one hell of a deep background which gets thrown into turmoil at the start of the game.

edit: and the guy GM'ing it is the kind who can let a whole night go past without even touching your dice, just loads of interaction and NPC's and stuff - really quite excited about the possibilities tomorrow night.

Ah sound the guy who used Gm for us was like that, but eventually our group ended up being 15 people strong and playing a game like Pendragon it was pretty hardcore so dice rolling became a neccessity.

wheres that nerve i wanna hit it again

Was reading a captains log from one vessel in the 1820's One crew member who was caught, lets just say "alone" with a younger member was (without any evidence) subjected to 56 lashes, and dismissed from the navy.

Sorry i just can't understand why people have to take the piss when we we're discussing/contributing stuff to the conversation. That and it annoys me when people with no actually concept of how you play said game try to take the piss.

On another note, my lot are starting a new COC campaign soon i think, should be a good laugh have no idea what i'm going to play yet.. But i'm sure i'll think of something.

Taking the piss doesn't bother me as much as pointless name calling :)

Those people who just post comments about homosexuality within the navy just make me laugh as they clearly have no idea about their history (maybe they don't want to know - fine - but to me its fascinating to see how our race has evolved)

Equally I think i'd have to agree the majority of RP'ers have boring lives, i know I do - but when you open unleash the imagination these people have its phenomenal.

I know that all (bar one who's only 17) of our players earn close to 40k, so there either lucky or have the brains :)
