I've been a Labour voter for the past 20 years, but still I agree with this.

I think the goverment guy who put this in motion got owned by some 12 hour/day playing "eleet" player :D

But seriously, playing games all day is no less wasting your time as is doing sports, riding a bike or watching TV.

We all waste our time really.

So you won't have heard of the congestion charge then. Or 'green taxes'. Want to rewire your bathroom? How about making your own windows for your house? Still, you could always try to demonstrate outside Parliament. Or perhaps you'd like to critisise a religious belief? Maybe you'd like a council inspector into your house to assess it for taxation purposes? Perhaps you'd like the police to confiscate your collection of Golliwogs? You could also get investigated for writing to your council expressing concern over gay rights?

While you're at it, lets have your car in the garage to install that RFID tag in the licence plate. Oh, and you really don't want that shotgun, unless you're a bank robber - after all, you can't hunt foxes any more.

Governments should make the laws and policy to run the country - not its people. They should not be beyond critisism as well, but just you try it outside parliament and you'll be in the back of a police van before you know it. At which point they'll take your DNA (even if you're not charged), and force you in 10 years to buy an ID card to stop you being a terrorist.

Of course they do. In hundreds of ways, both overt and covert, every single day. Its a myth that the Tories don't to tell you what to do (all British governments are esentially paternalistic), but Labour do it a hell of a lot more, and its getting worse all the time. The very fact that you can seriously say "No one tells me how to live my life", and believe it, shows the level to which you're not thinking for yourself right now.

Aye tis called life - its something to fill the time between birth n death - everything you do is a waste of time when looked at to the nth degree so just do what you enjoy :)

And to Chilly theres no point in regrets or might have beens - if you got addicted to daoc than theres a fair bet you could have become addicted to something far more destructive such as gambling or alcohol or drugs - your still alive and its a world of opportunity - what Uni you get your degree at need have no impact on your life - degree's full stop become basically irrelevant after your first job so enjoy yourself :)

I work, I eat, I sleep and I even make love if the wife will allow it. At no point in any of these things is the government telling me what I can and cant do. This is my life as basic as you want it. I pay my Taxes I dont mind I wont complain ever. I just happen to be laid back.

You seem to be picking up random things. I really dont care about any of those things you have given as an example.

Of course it is! Ever heard of Health & Safety Laws? Food Standards? Working Time Directives? And that's just the obvious stuff; they're also trying to influence you in countless other ways; junior ministers working on healthy eating, tax breaks for employers in some areas not in others, ministers encouraging women to be working mums/stay at home mums or whatever the fuck is in fashion with the think tanks that week, other ministers encouraging people to have kids - yes even 'making love to the wife' is fair game for interference as far as politicians are concerned. And don't think all of this interference doesn't work - its built into society and you've been taking in stuff like this since school. The problem is now that Labour don't think anything is outside of their remit, and even if you don't think it works, its still important to protest because its a waste of your and my hard-earned that could be spent on the stuff that governments are supposed to do.

Wasn't some labour MP banging on about having thermostats on all newly installed baths, because so many people a year get burnt in baths?

people think its OK to have their right to take care of them selves, taking away. its ok that if you buy a new house, you arnt allowed to use water above a certain temp. it is OK to imply you are personally too stupid to use the bath propley :/

Could have fucked me degree up playing Tribes, but didn't have a net connection, so fucked it up through alcohol abuse instead :)

On topic:
I've been to a few Chinese net cafes (vast majority of these guys don't have puters at home) in the two months I was travelling there, and Christ some of those boys looked ill! Huge, very dark rooms, same number of computers as an i-series event, all occupied by teenagers playing some RPG I hadn't come across.

Other random China stuff:
Was there during the beginning of Iraq take 2 & SARS (where is your mask?), not allowed to visit the BBC website, however met a media student (native) in Beijing who had access to all the restricted sites at their school. They were taught about the BBC from a government point of view!

Channel 4 news streaming of previous nights news worked fine, so least I got to see the mighty John Snow when I was in a city :p Otherwise, I had to rely on CNN (fuck off with your shite propoganda) of TV5 (got more out of this with my crap French skills, than CNN) for news from the world.

Ben.

All of these things come with living in a modern world my friend. You would be pissing and moaning if there was no safety laws at work and everyone that has an accident would be fooked. Again these have no bearing on my day to day living because I do not think of these things. omg its Tuesday and its 8:30 gotta get to work, oh noes what about the health and safety laws.... I doubt it.

Yes the government make decisions on a whole I am happy for them to do so my only moan would be I have to pay for a shit TV license for crappy BBC which I never watch. As I have said I am happy to pay for a ID card :p because I have nothing to hide I am a law abiding Citizen.

I never drive above the speed limit either, but I hear all the time people that speed then cry when a speed camera catches them fucking morons, oh I forgot if you pay and race on a track for 20 minutes and take your pass plus and watch Top Gear it qualifies you to drive faster cause your mint!!!!!!!!!

Go outside live some, stop moaning about shit that really does not have a direct affect on your life.

If you're a law-abiding citizen then surely you'd have no objection to the police checking your house every single week for the rest of your life? You'd also have no objection to the government installing software that logs your every single keystroke and interface with your computer at all times?

After all you've got nothing to hide have you?

Your right I dont. If it means catching the rapists and paedo's and drug pushers I dont mind, it all makes the world a safer place to be. This is you doing what you do best Tom going over the top. The policemen have no need to check my house every week however, if they want to come for tea I will get my wife to sort it out.

I am not a sheep I just dont care, there are people starving to death and you and Tom are moaning because something that you wont even notice is going to happen boo fucking hoo. As long as Tom has his car and he can speed and evade the law he is happy, its no different to me not complaining I dont have enough time between work, play and the wife to complain all day long about pointless crap.

It seems like you'd be happy to forfeit all of your civil liberties, Calaen, in order to be safe. In my opinion and most other peoples here that's far too high a price.

Honestly for a Serenity fan (I assume, from the avatar) you really don't seem to get/agree with the main premise of the film.

How do I know they have no need to check your house every week? You sound like a terrorist with something to hide.

Perhaps you should be locked up for weeks on end, with no charge?
