Murder of a person gets you life imprisonment (not including shortening the time).
Murder of an animal should also give you life imprisonment.

On a slightly different angle im not sure of the exact stat's but it has been proven that there is a link between animal cruelty and serious crimes against people, it seems that a lot of violent/sadistic criminals (im not talking your spur of the moment crime of passion people) i.e serial killers start with inflictling harm even killing family pets or pets of people in their neighbourhoods then when this fails to satisfy them they progress upwards to more violent acts and then on to people.
Now i know that you cant imprison people for what they might do but surely people convicted of seriously viscious crimes against animals (im not talking neglect here, its usually the thick, bone idle slobs that are guilty of this) then this should be kept on record, and as far as i know if a child shows signs of psychopathy for example animal abuse or even abuse of other children (but generally that would be too much of a step foward and they start with little things that cant fight back or tell on them) and has sadistic tendancys this can not be kept on record*.
So maybe you would think that if a child has exhibited such tell tale signs as this and it is kept on record then if they ever come under suspicion for a serious crime in their adult life these records can be examined, compairing wound patterns say or method of infliction (which could work for or against the suspect as it is often the case that multiple killers usually stick to a set pattern) admittedly people change while growing but some things may stay the same and it would give the police a hell of a heads up when searching for a violent suspect.
I'm not saying throw everyone guilty of abusing an animal in prison ( as much as i'd like to i realise that with our already overcrowded prison system this is impractical) and if it were up to me personally i'd happily stick them in a cage with a tiger see how they like it, but i do seriously think that the police/social services should take these facts in to consideration and see that animal abuse isn't the petty crime they seem to put it down as and is infact a serious crime in its self (if they don't feel it bad enough that this person is torturing animals maybe when/if they progress to torturing people then they will pay atention).
(*as far as i know in this country a child can not be diagnosed as being psychopathic, which is daft because if they are caught early the treatment they could receive might actually prevent any of the serious symptoms from coming out.... but im not going in to the murky depths of child psychopaths)
thats dogs btw, cats can live up to a average age of 17ish, my cat lived til 21haarewin said:i'm sorry, but no.
animals do not live as long as humans. a kitten would live around 14 years. a human would live ~75 (probably longer for this generation).
the life sentence is only like 20 years anyway.

Funnily enough, neither is Huddersfield.
And given that both Barnsley and Huddersfield are supposedly 'industrial urban areas' I'd be highly surprised at you finding any sheep in close proximity to either place.
Still, I suppose it's easy to refer to the age old cliches when referring to Yorkshire.

the 2 girls that got murdered by Ian Huntley lost (combined) around 130 years of life. therefore, Ian Huntley should never be allowed out of jail.
someone that killed (for example) a 5 year old dairy cow would, by your belief, be imprisoned for life because they killed a cow that could expect to see 18 more months. im not saying they shouldnt be punished, but life imprisonment seems ludicrous.
