windows won't start up due to problem in win32k.sys

Hi mates, i'd like some help from you haxxors out there.

All of a sudden my windows crashed and automatically rebooted the comp. When it starts up again it gets all the way through the windows loading screen and just when its loading up the windows desktop it reboots again, and loops itself like this.

I tried starting windows in safe mode but that doesn't help, and when i activate "problem logging" from the boot menu (f8 during startup etc) i get a bluescreen of death with some system info on.
It says windows can't be started due to a problem with win32k.sys and some X00000- number (i'm at work now, didn't write it down exactly).

Anyone recognize the problem?

i'm running windows XP home SP2 SE btw if that helps.

Hope you can help me at least understand what the problem MIGHT be.

Cant remember the options in XP, but there should be a "Last Known Good" profile that you can select.

When you get past the login screen in windows - it takes a copy of the registry and calls it Last Known Good, this should get you back into the box. The option should be on startup on the F8 list somewhere.

If you can get to the login screen - try holding down SHIFT when the machine boots/logs in this will by pass any applications in the startup folders - which could be causing this problem.

Do you have any anti virus software on your PC ? would be worth running a scan as soon as you can.

a quick run on google shows that there are quite a lot of possible problems. Check that errorcode again, google for win32k.sys and the 0x00000?? errorcode. Not much more that I can tell you now about this...

Had a similar problem - tried loads - and some fixed the problem but left lots of smaller issues, a clean re-install cured it for good (re-format your hard drive) if your lucky enuff to own a Windows OS installation disc.

That's what i ended up doing

I run windows on a separate partition so it's easy to do and i don't lose the stuff i want to keep, and it solved it.

If he can't get into safe mode which boots no software but only the drivers and other files your computer needs to boot. Hes fooked unless he could of booted from his windows cd gone to recovercy console and scandisked - CHKDSK /P which might of fixed it. Worked for me loads of times with windows problems or courrupt files.

maybe a bit late now, but a good hint for anyone else reading.

Right click on my computer and select options. Select the advanced tab and in the 'Startup and Recovery' section click the settings button. In the 'Systems Failure' section UNTICK the automatiacally restart box, otherwise the PC will get stuck in a loop when it encounters a serious problem ,as yours is now by the sound of it.
