The problem with ants, or rather, an individual ant, is that they are not what can be regarded as a living entity, but rather as an extension of the colony.

Worker and Soldier Ants are all female, all sterile, and share at least 75% of the genetic structure aas their "sisters", in this way they are not like offspring of the Queen Ant, but rather like disembodied arms and legs that do the Queen's bidding from afar.

They are Borg!!

I've just landscaped our front garden, all the digging has disturbed the ants, who have decided inside the house is a better option. I use stuff called Nippon, its a sweet skicky liquid, only a drop or two needed. The ants love it, take it back for the queen, and she dies, goodbye ant colony. Although these latest ants seem to have "apapted" in true Borg stylee and its taking longer than usual to die.........fuckers.

Boiling hot water does the job. May have side effects on electrical equiptment though

Killing ants is like cropping hairs off a dog or cat, ordinary Workers are expendable and easily replaced, if that makes you feel better about it.

resistance is teh futile!

ants don't have anywhere near as complex a central nervous system as any mammal (or most insects for that matter) so it's arguable as to whether they actually feel any pain...

I reckon you should throw everything you can at the little blighters :D:D

WD40 will remove any moister from any small insect (flies and wasps in particular) it's quite amusing for those "insta-kill" and it's like watching something on fast forward decompose.

Kills Ants, they are evil.

By all means do! I was quite surprised by the sheer effectiveness of it all. Quite hard to hit flies properly though, the only reason I managed successfully in that instance was because the wee bugger had caught himself in a big ol' spider web.

(talk about kicking them when they're down :p )

Yeah, but if the spider tries to eat it later, then it might get poisened.

Spiders are the natural ally of all bug haters. Not only do they make free fly-traps(aka spider webs), but they eat them as well, meaning you don't have to throw away the dead flies!

Spiders are allways welcom here. As long as they're not too big mind.

I've bought an ant trap. I'll be *really* nerdy and scan in the dead things I find in there at the end of the week.

Nb - ant trap is not like scaled down version of mouse trap.

Heh, well Dyson (our cleaner fish Kenny bought to clean the tank) died a few days ago. Kenny didn't even tell me. He just threw him in the bin.

i spent ages looking for him, thinking he'd either commited suicide and leapt to freedom or was really really well camoflaged.

hmm, i see a pattern developing here...

do you think you should hold off on any further fishie purchases until you can get some training? or possibly just psych evaluated - two dead in two weeks is a bit of an omen...

1) you KILLED the mouse, yet you like ANTS?

2) maybe your fishtank needs patching to the latest version (1.2.9)? :p

I personally didn't kill the mice. We left traps. And a cat, whose food we had spiked with coffee granules. Which, I know, is highly unethical, but a) I was younger and b) it was quite funny. The kitchen looked like a vermin version of Chainsaw Massacre had been filmed in there over night. My cat's a little twitching psycopath. Mice bring diseases and poop indoors, otherwise I would be nice to them. The ants, effectively, are cleaning up after me, because I'm a mucky pup and leave crumbs by my desk. They just got a bit too power hungry, and invaded the rest of the house, thats all. And they have knees in their antennia, which is something I find randomly endearing. Secretly, I'm hoping they don't die in their hundreds in the ant trap.

I like spiders. Except black widows. Ever since that warm and dusty evening...

Agreed heh :) The little ones are ok, but i try to keep my distance from hte big ones.

I take comfort from the fact that they're more scared of me than i am of them :)

Spiders are great, you ever looked at one under a microscope? Beautiful things :)

/me goes back to playing with that antcity thing.

Oh, Damini, you have to kill the ants, no other solution, problem is that it sounds like you have such an infestation of them by now that you're going to have to commit a mass extermination, whereas if you'd put your foot down right at the start you might have gotten away with a small serial-killer toll of dead ants :/

Nippon 0r Nip-Pon or something like that.

Doesn't kill them for about 2 hours by which time the workers have taken a shit load back to the nest :)

I don't want to kill the nest! I don't really want to kill any ants at all. I just wanted them to stop building houses under the hub thingy in the hallway :(

And I know Granny, I maybe should have, but its hard when you've started giving them pet names :(

Unless you kill the nest they will just keep coming back, and there will be more nests/ants. Even if using Nippon it could take a week or two before they fook off.

Just how many did you name? And can you recognise the ones you have named? You're quite mad you know :)
