I feel like I've missed a trick by not playing Elite: Dangerous.

I picked it up in Beta, put about 30 hours into it and was really enjoying myself. Then they wiped the saves for release and I went "fuck it" and never went back. Had a couple of looks in VR (utterly stunning) but by then had moved here and didn't have the space or time.

There was a big Thargoid war and some of the footage was really fucking cool (I watched an in-game vid of a 'titan' exploding in a nebula - the captain of the ship had to get to like earth > mars distances so the explosion wouldn't take him out.

Now apparently they're releasing a "go colonise the solar systems" update. Including planets, of course.

I think I actually have the sort of eternal account for all updates etc? Haven't touched it in years :unsure:

I think that you add on stuff and it opens abilities.

I look at it now and think time sink. but look at all my other wasted time...

Edit: Apart from Noita. No time in Noita is wasted, apart from all if it. All those hundreds of hours :eek:

Same, I found a load of exclusive goodies in my account for being part of that early Lifetime Access Pass that can't be obtained any other way. I actually started playing it this month for the first time since beta a decade ago since I saw the same Thargoid news. Missed the end of the war but there's actually content in the game now. It's still shallow but there's a *lot* of it. The flight engine is still the best in class along with the audio. It has certainly been keeping me occupied.

What was it like starting out again? I kinda feel daunted by the prospect.

Well the first time you zoom out the Galaxy Map and see 400 billion stars in the Milky Way and realise you can visit *every one* can certainly make anyone feel overwhelmed. The game now has a small intro tutorial which is functional but nothing more. It shows you the new on-foot settlement interactions and some flight mechanics but it still essentially throws you in at the deep end cold. So set your own (early) goals. I just started out small by doing a few courier missions to earn enough credits to upgrade my ship, that got me learning how to navigate and flying. Then I found a system in a temporary booming economy where I could haul precious minerals between two stations and earned millions. But what really sold the game to me was the recent Exploration Community Goal. It got me to leave civilisation and find new uninhabited solar systems and to then land and scan new alien life. You get large bonuses by being the first person to find / scan / land on a planet and even more by taking biological samples. It's a super chill way to play the game, no urgent rush to do anything and it's *extremely* profitable if you find special planets or lifeforms. My first trip thousands of light years from the starter area earned me my first billion credits and gave me the knowledge I was the first person to ever see or stand on the planets I found.

Cons: the in-game tools and help is pants. It either assumes people to having been playing constantly for the last ten years and know all the intricacies or it's just a very confusing or unclear UI (for example the new Power Play system is great for RP and getting you to do stuff in-game but its documentation is awful). So you can't play the game properly without watching some Youtube tutorials or using player created websites like Inara (a must!!!).

No VR for me but I'm told it might be the best use of / looking VR game around, not that it looks bad without it.

I bought the base game on release, but bounced off it pretty hard (and everything in game!) so stopped. One of those games I really want to like, but put off by the accessibility.

I kind of want to wait for my house to be finished, then sort out my shit, get the VR out and then lose myself in it.

Or I could just fucking ride my bike and shag the missus.

Close thing ;)

Is that similar to Eve Online ?
Not really. Elite is more a huge sandbox and doesn't have that level of player driven economy or politics. That's why it's often described as 'shallow. Little you do affects the galaxy, though stuff they've added since I last played does go some way to fix that. You can also play it in "Solo" mode and never have to be worried about getting ganked by another player with a top of the line engineered ship that obliterates you in seconds (that often happens if you play in Open Mode in "event" systems or areas).

Same, I think I donated to it as a joke with MikeyBear, along the lines of get it cheap so I could say it was shit. Joke backfired as it's been going for ages now. If i'd played it as much it would almost have been as good a deal as my lifetime Star Trek: Online subscription (which I also can't belive is still going)

Tried Eve Online once. Thought it would be easy to get into. It completely bamboozled me.

I enjoyed Eve for a couple of months, but by design, there is no way of catching up. You sort of hit a cap, and there is little prospect of getting past it. Just earning enough points to fly a particular ship can take months, months that you can just set your research (or whatever it is called) and not ever log in to actually play. There is little skill involved, just time (monthly subs) investment.

Simple solution, make it illegal to breed them, make it a legal requirement to have them sterilised, if you already own them. I am an animal lover and understand how you wouldn't give up a family member, but we have no need for more of them.

Realised today that I have been wearing a wedding ring more in my life than I haven't. I fucking hate wearing jewellery. Wife casually says, oh I don't mind if you don't wear it...

<snip>

Anyhow I will be charging from home, just not at 7kw for a while, I don't even have a consumer unit yet.

<snip>
Eh? You light your house up with candles, burn wood for heating and cooking or am I being dense and you have an extension lead plugged into next door so you can nick the electric? Failing that logic was your house built in the stone age?

You'd think an IT guy would recognise the difference between a fusebox and a consumer unit...

Yeah, but if you don't have a consumer unit, how does your house receive electricity?

I do, a consumer unit is a modern version for the old fuse boxes of yesteryear where you used nails if the fuse blew and you had no spares.

I've played EvE Online for several years way back when. Was in beta, then public beta, then played since release. I quit playing around 2008/2009.

Was part of the Northern Alliance, in a corp called Cutting Edge Industries, later founders of Razor Alliance, for which I did all the visual identity - logo, forum signatures, killboard banners, the works. Beyond my role as the local gfx guy, I used to be a decent (some would say elite) Interceptor pilot and Fleet Commander.

It was _very_ fun while it lasted, but it was not a game compatible with social / family life. I dropped it once CCP started nerfing Interceptors, rendering my niche specialty skill of locating, scanning and finding hidden fleets useless.
