I'd like to learn how to make Android apps, so need to get started with coding.

(The last time I programmed was 30 odd years ago: BASIC, Pascal, & Z80 assembly language)

What language(s) do I need ? Anyone recommend any trusted / reliable apps that will guide me through the processes of writing Android apps?

Cheers

I think you're underestimating the difficulty of making Android apps. Java or Kotlin (Java but better) are the mostly likely languages you'll need (you can write apps in others like Python but they're not considered official Android languages by Google), Android Studio or IntelliJ IDEA for an IDE (probably the former).

I watched a youtube vid that showed people making android apps online with a wysiwyg interface.
Maybe thats too generic for you.

Thx. I think I'm starting to realise the complexity of it. Kotlin & Android Studio may be my starting points.

Android Studio is daunting enough as it is, that's before you even start messing around with Android SDKs to emulate devices and ADB to connect to a phone via USB and all the rest. You'll find tutorials to get up and running on Youtube but Google's documentation is excellent...

It's worth just messing about, seeing how things work. You don't need to learn Java or Kotlin inside out unless you're doing something highly complicated or at all to get a basic app up and running.

What kind of Apps? And any particular reason why Android only?

Last app I was involved in directly was a couple of years ago and the Android version was developed in Firebase, which was considered industry standard. However, more recently I've been working with lots of Fintechs and almost all of them are developing in React Native (Facebook's app dev language) because it's the best cross-platform language currently out there.

My bro needs an Android app (he has an Android phone) to solve a number of esoteric mathematical equations whose input is based on Google Maps navigation output data (distance between any two points, travel time, etc). Nothing exists commercially to do this in an app. Manually calculating it is too time consuming.

Respectfully (and because, frankly, we know you), you're not going to knock that out as your first app. :)

If starting from scratch you could give Flutter a whirl, it abstracts a lot of the complexities of working with Androids OS life cycle (which is a huge pain)

I watched a vid on the Great Eastern, the huge ship Brunel built to connect Britain with Australia without stops..the original transatlantic liner.
It ended up as the worlds undersea cable layer and ended its life being scrapped at Liverpool docks.
Everton bought the mast when they played at Anfield and it still stands there now looking over Liverpools games.

Sounds like you need a Google docs form rather than an app tbfh

Could he make use of this in any way:

Link? I had a quick look through the Wikipedia history, that's some story!
