Jesus. That's a long list. Hard to comprehend how many people must have been there.

It has been estimated that 400 firefighters dispatched to the scene are missing. It has also been said that 78 Police officers are missing.

They all risked their lives to save others :(

This is a total outrage, and IMO merely the first strike in Al Qeada' s "Jihad" against the US, and the entire western world.

They need to be wiped out. I'm not advocating war against Afghanistan (though I do have big problems with the Taliban regime there), this is not anti-Arab bigotry, it is justice. The people responsible must be wiped from this planet. There is no other way, they will stop at nothing to destroy us.

Osala Bin Laden is totally capable of this crime. It will have taken around *20* of their men, maybe more, depending on how many were on each aircraft. Months, if not years of planning, and a fair amount of cash. Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have all of this, plus a religious zealotry no-one in this country can even begin to imagine.

I'm very very afraid this is the start of a war, but at the end of it, the world will be a better place. It will bring together the civilized nation in a way never seen before, to drive this evil from our world.

It is an utter, utter outrage against civilised society.

One thing I would request is a one minute freeze of all Barrysworld servers, as a mark of respect for the dead and grieving in the US. Quite how anyone can be entertained by a game such as CS at a time like this is beyond me, but still...

The end does not justify the means if you ask me mid_gen.
Starting a war to obtain peace is not my idea of how matters should be conducted.

However I feel that bin Laden and his minions will _never_ lay down their quest to destroy the "enemy" and therefore should be removed for the good of all. I feel that, because this bin Laden person has proven himself capable of lashing out with extreme violence at _any_ person indiscriminatly, I will be able to set my conscience aside and wish him dead. I have enough faith in the various "Secret Services" of the world that, bumbling though they may seem, they are quite capable of taking him out given enough resources. And believe me, those resources _will_ be made available after yesterday.

I fear however, that his removal will make him a martyr for other people who follow his beliefs. Killing or jailing him will result in a spree of attacks that will know no bounds I'm afraid. Will it be worth it? I don't know, and I'm very glad it won't be up to me to decide.

One thing though...if it's such a noble cause [in _their_ opinion], and they gladly offer up their lives...then wtf is the mad bastage still living? Shouldn't someone as pious as bin Laden claims he is have "offered" himself long ago?

I never advocated a war against Afghnaistan, more an informal war against terrorism. Declaring war on the country harbouring Bin Laden would be very very wrong, and would only strengthen resolve against the US and her interests. Simply taking out Bin Laden will not be enough, his whole upper hierarchy must be destroyed.

It's never nice to have to take human life, but sometimes it is neccessary in order to defend the lives of countless others, and freedom in the civilized world.

I just hope American patriotism and pride doesn't drive them to something rash :(

Did anyone else think that Bush's speeches were awfully wooden and fell far short of the mark as regards what is expected of a president at these times? The fact that he is clearly not the puppet-master was cruelly exposed with his bumbling words & poor delivery. I always knew he was a terrible public speaker but I think this could be one of the most testing times ever for a US president, and I dont think he is up to the job.

Come back Clinton - whatever about his personal life, I think he would have spoken to the soul of the nation with far more feeling than Bush.

In any event, my condolences to all those involved.

More unfortunate breaking news.

Just heard on sky unconfirmed reports that a further 4 planes had to be shot down by the military yesterday. Details are sketchy at present.

I doubt that very much...even if the government placed a gag on the airlines people on the ground would still have witnessed domestic airlines being shot out of the sky. Surely they would have come forward by now.
Godforbid if it is true, you gotta feel for the pilot's of the jetfighters shooting down their own planes full of their own civilians in their own airspace :(

That is utter horseshit..

"The chairman of the Afghan defence council claims the Saudi millionaire would not kill innocent people."

Utter bollocks, he was behind the bombing of the WTC in '93

I just hope he gets buried, not cremated, so I can spit on his grave.

That was just the sketchy reports the CAA were releasing - saying they have 4 planes 'unaccounted for' rather than saying 4 planes crashed ! - its likely to be the same 4 planes!

Although it does look likely one of those 4 'may' have been shot down before it reached its target - press is still very sketchy about the circumstances !

That is the FAA, the FEDERAL Aviation Authority, in the US, NOT the CAA, the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

Please be careful with your facts, this is a sensitive time and you can scare a lot of people by posting innacurate info like that :(

It was probably just a typo. One char off, but a very important one ;)

There are *NO* aircraft missing or shot down in the UK.

One thing that annoys me about the media coverage is people quoting sources saying it was an intelliegence failure on the part of the US government.
The IRA put it best; "We've only got to be lucky once, they've got to be lucky every single time..."
Godknows how many times they've defended the USA against terrorist plots in the past, and I'm sure they aren't going to rest until they catch those responsible for this atrocity

Plus, how the hell do you defend against Suicide Bombings??

It always pissess me off that in situations such as these, there are always the few who try and blame everyone and anyone for these attrocities.

Well they could always read one of the 20 or so other Papers, watch one of the 5 terrestrial TV channels, 200 or so digital / satalite channels or read one of the 1000s of websites with it on.
