Noone sees how this is completely detached from SW : old republic lore and the galactic conflict in the game?

Sith and Republic fighting for control of planets and star systems, then doing some R&R in huttball?

I don't understand your issue. Here is the obvious real-world example.

Legend has it that on Christmas Day 1915, soldiers from both sides of the trenches in World War One met up in No-Man’s-Land for a game of football. Nothing official was kept of this brief meeting on Christmas Day between the enemy, so our knowledge of what took place has always been somewhat patchy. However, the death in 2001 of one of the men who took part in this match resurrected memories of the occasion.

Bertie Felstead, the last survivor of that football match, died in July 2001 aged 106 years.

Bertie Felstead, pictured above, remembered the following:

He was a member of the Royal Welch Fusiliers.

On Christmas Eve, he was stationed in northern France with his colleagues near the village of Laventie when he heard the Germans in a trench 100 metres away singing “Silent Night”. In reply, the Royal Welch Fusiliers sang “Good King Wenceslas”.

On Christmas Day, after some shouting between both trenches, he and his colleagues got out of their icy trench and greeted the Germans. Bertie Felstead recalled that the Germans probably were already out of their trench before the British got out. He claimed that nothing was planned and that what happened was entirely spontaneous.

A football was produced from somewhere – though he could no re-call from where.

“It was not a game as such – more of a kick-around and a free-for-all. There could have been 50 on each side for all I know. I played because I really liked football. I don’t know how long it lasted, probably half-an-hour, and no-one was keeping score.”

The truce ended when a British major ordered the British soldiers back to their trench with a reminder that “they were there to kill the Hun not to make friends with him.” The mood of Christmas friendliness was shortly broken by the firing of British artillery. Bertie Felstead described the Germans as “all right”.

Wars are rarely personal between the combatants, particularly nowadays, as the politicians who begin the wars are too cowardly and arrogant to participate themselves.

Here is a song about that:

You can't really compare to the real world as SWTOR is set in a sci-fi universe filled with stereotypes. Siths are the ruthless haters etc.

Siths are the ruthless haters etc.

I expect those stereotypes to be examined more closely in the game. By that I mean - why would players be given any options while playing one of the black-and-white good/evil characters, rather than force them to choose the good/evil option depending upon the stereotype? Why give Sith players the option NOT to be ruthless?

I believe there will be a lot more of a grey area than you seem to be suggesting.

We shall see.

Well they are giving you an option, you could be a sith that wants public admiration and thus huttball will give you a root to that. To be honest, there isnt really many things that are more ruthless then killing for pure sport instead of for a reason.

Well of course all good role playing games give choice of building an unique character, whether its supported by the game mechanics or not.

Just saying there are many things that do not make sense in this old republic setting bioware is making for star wars (SW in general is an entirely different discussion)

I am going to take a punt and guess that they will add a realm-switching mechanic at some point, so people can go from one side of the force to another if they have enough of the opposite force points.

The reason I say this is because the force point system doesn't seem to make much sense to me without it.

I really hope so, I don't like the idea of being tied to one realm/side. I remember back in UO in Factions and Order/Chaos when guilds would fall out, so one would change side so they could fight, it was a pretty enjoyable system when allegiance can change.

I would not hold my breath for this, because everything so far have shot that down.

Plus the game mechanics would make it very difficult to say the least. It's not WoW where a Warrior exists on either side and there's no story connected to the class. A switching would require additional story work, additional class work, itemization work and so on, on top of that the fact that Dark/light exists on either side makes it implausible. Remember, The Republic isn't Light side and the Empire isn't Dark side.

A Light sided Sith Warrior does not really function as a class within the Republic.

So - I would not expect this until after the game has lost most subscribers and they do no longer care about expanding the game and just wants to make some quick cash.

I highly doubt it because the classes arent mirrors to each other. Powers on each side are different and as such you would need to revert your character to a different class.

The only way I could see them allowing a switch of sides is if they decide to have a "neutral" side that basically can fight with any of the others but I find that highly doubtful as well because alot of people would swap to that so they can fight both light and dark side more often.

I would like a 3rd "side" in the battle but just dont know how to do that though and keep it fitting with the story.

And remember, Lucas signs off on everything that goes into this game and as such he must feel it does fit in ok with the timeline for such behaviour to be happening.. yes I admit it is a push but I can see how it can be so.

That actually looks pretty enjoyable, looks like a bit of a cross between typical modern MMO pvp, and the old starwars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy or Force Unleashed.

All pvp following daoc though seems to be unable to capture proper world pvp with roaming and random encounters.

Does look good :) I really wanted to play a Sage ... but the one in that video was woeful. Gunslinger looked very handy though!

Argh. I'm getting that feeling i got with SW:G again, which is bad, because i really don't know if i should fork out for another MMO.

But it looks solid, it's star warsy with an old twist, it's got an UI that works(wow just does) and all this at launch. My bounty hunter sense is tingling.

Any points pro/con that might persuade me either way?

At first I was extremely dismissive of this game, but it is actually shaping up rather nicely. I like their approach to CC immunities in PvP also.

I was not very impressed by their pvp to me it looked just standard.
To me swtor is not bringing anything new to an already very full mmo table, if anything is very similar to every other mmo out there already, with the only plus difference been that is based on star wars. Apart from that is the same 40 of this and 40 of that quest, with what to me is not a pvp that has me screaming OMG!.

I found a dev response to a similar concern on the forums yesterday...
Is it so hard to believe that the best warriors of various, often hostile, factions would come together at a neutral place to test each other's prowess and ability in various ways? Especially if there's the chance that some accidents may happen to the other team on the way?

It's not like that's unheard of, even during a cold war between mortal enemies :)

You don't need origin to download, patch or play the game.
You'll probable just download some patcher exe that will download the game.
I'm not going to install origin either :)

It is comfirmed by a bioware dev.... copy/paste :

Regardless of what other games may choose to do in their integration with Origin's desktop client, here's what our situation is:

You are not required to use the Origin desktop client to download, patch or play the game client for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

This applies whether you purchase The Old Republic via Origin.com or from a retailer in boxed form. You will not be forced to install the Origin desktop client.

There are still various consumer benefits to the client itself, but it's not required for The Old Republic.

Im leaning towards a sith sorcerer tank-spec after todays released video. The force storm looks great. heh.

Was always leaning towards one of the saber-staff users, but the sith just looks like it be visually more enjoyable.

BAh, co-worker said i'm stupid for buying the 150€ collectors edition.

Don't these people understand that a statue, art book and random ingame items(like a holodancer ffs!) are well worth it :p

:p

I'm going to avoid the CE edition this time, I've done it with the last few MMO releases and found them not to be fun games. I'd only go for the expensive version if I play beta and find it to be the most amazing game I've ever seen :D

Old news really, but here it is anyway...

SWTOR beta test weekends to begin September 2nd
by Shawn Schuster on Aug 28th 2011 10:00PMBetas, Sci-fi, New titles, Star Wars: The Old Republic32

There you were, thinking this upcoming weekend was going to be another one when you sat around in your underwear, trying to beat that last Challenge level in Peggle, but we're here to tell you to cancel those plans.

Starting September 2nd, Star Wars: The Old Republic will begin its beta test weekends for a select few who registered on the game's website. This news was announced earlier today at PAX Prime, including the fact that even those who didn't pre-order can have an equal chance to participate.

So get those registrations in if you still haven't, and for Obi Wan's sake, put some pants on.

I beta tested WoW, and whilst I enjoyed it and helped me get off to a flyer levelling when the game went live ... it also took some of the shine off the game for me. Not sure I'd do that again.
