Guaranteed? Hmm.. Not so sure about that. I see an awful lot of drooling over GW2 and SWTOR and a few dribs and drabs of people chatting about other stuff. A few people sticking with something they're not entirely happy with (Aion, Rift, Eve, Warhammer), but not reluctant to leave by any stretch of the imagination.

From what I can tell SWTOR and GW2 will pull a lot of people from those "nearly man" games.

yeah but that's new games.

Not a 3+ year old utterly failed game that has gotten a much needed overhaul from a company people just don't trust any more... :)

Look at AoC, that's not such a bad game any more, it has gotten that overhaul and it's still doing so badly that they are forced to go F2P for it to survive.

It's like that saying. "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me". And MMO gamers seems to have taken that to heart.

true, they would need something pretty big to draw people back, and it would have to be really really good to keep people playing

Side note, AOC and AO have had great success with their F2P models, drawing players in. Think it might be worth checking out AOC again after 3 years to be fair, see how well it has aged.

Anyways, to keep it on-topic. What faction/class you people going to play?

I would happily role either side of the factions. Especially if people here have a common side. Be nice to start a new game with people already know from elsewhere - this is a game the Mrs wont be playing afteral.

Originally I was thinking of going for one of the "Evade tanks" because I actually used to play my Daoc merc in that manner. Many a people will remember me chargining around the likes of ML8 zone collecting 50 mobs, running back and going "I take them all on". lol. Great fun that was. Though at one point I did change him to shield spec to make it easier. :D

But as others said, saber classes be highly popular so I just dont know now. Healer could be interesting but dont like the non-force healers to much. I may end up just playing every class through the early levels to get a feel for them and see which I enjoy most... but may just forget the issue of what others doing and go with my initial thought

Do you think a Core 2 Duo 6420, 2gb RAM and ATI 1950 Pro would cope with this? I'd love to give it a pop on release but not too keen on replacing my vid card as I hardly touch PC gaming any more.

Well, every class has its own appeal. Its more about the roles you prefer, since the holy trinity (healer, tank, dps) is in the game. In addition to the back story of each class, which is supposed to be vastly different.

Also regarding factions, they are mainly there to create conflict as you can regardless of faction be light or dark side. (I have no idea how this works for non-force users)

heh AOC is free now? whats new about it? I quit like 2 weeks after release.

Its f2p but with limited use. Only 4 classes available and some more restrictions regarding size of bank and so on. There's also a new "hardcore" pvp server where you can loot a random item off players you kill or so. In addition theres all the numerous changes since release, of which I have little clue about. But the game has apparently become alot more polished.

Quite fancy playing a Jedi Sage, mostly for the utility of the character. Might give smuggler a go too, not sure I'll delve into the dark side but if I can make a guy with wicked facepaint and a two hander lightsabre that would be tempting.

The free starships in swtor per player doesn't make sense at all, you basically start off with next to nothing and need to scrape together credits for basic gear. And then you suddenly get military-class starships? These ships are insanely expensive in the star wars universe!

QFT ships should be expensive and a thing to work for.

the problem being that they would end up being flogged on eBay i guess

maybe give everyone little dinky ships (Robin Reliants) at the start and force you to work up towards better ones?

from what little i saw on the clip for space combat, there seems to be some quest line leading up to getting a ship. or who knows? maybe you won it in a card game?

If you were a poor trooper or smuggler, surely you would sell a military class spaceship for thousands of credits rather than being poor.

For example the imperial agent X-70B Phantom-class prototype is a prototype starship. Such ships in the star wars universe are typically valued at several hundred thousand credits. For example, the Slave I starship prototype (6 built) that Jango Fett stole has an approximate value of around 720k credits.

Seems in SWTOR everyone will run around with the same companions and the same unlogical starships pulled out of everyones behinds.

Well the starship thing is tough to balance, need planet travel and some classes have logical reasons for getting a good ship (ie jedi, military, sith etc all would be provided by their "government" once the person deemed fit for them... prototypes though are silly to have on the list though.

Really they would be better with a 4ships per class so that there was more variety, and hope this is something that they do

One of the few things SWG did well tbh.

You started off with a shitty spaceship and then worked your way up to the nice ones.

Will be fine if it is just a bit of fun, wouldn't like to see it detract from the PvP element.

Noone sees how this is completely detached from SW : old republic lore and the galactic conflict in the game?

Sith and Republic fighting for control of planets and star systems, then doing some R&R in huttball?

Same reason as STO isn't in line with the star trek movies.

They get more to work on, SWG partly failed because they had to follow the movie lore to the letter so SOE didn't have all that much to work with.

Agree with the social hubs tho, but i much rather prefer alternate timelines for content reasons.
