ok desperate man here...

just bought a new phone - an orange SPV... great, lovely, etc... ignore the shit on some websites about it, the reviews are right, it's a great phone.

anyway....

new phones get sent sim updates in the form of text messages yes? which you read and delete.

i was told to expect three sim updates.

i've had two....

the third is no where in sight... it seems to be the one that configures GPRS internet access etc...

anyone else got any experience with this phone? know what i should do etc? aside from phoning orange because their callcentre is closed at this time of night....

Umm...Call orange tomorrow morning?

Just a wild guess...;)

Doesnt the orange website have a place where they show you how to configure all those settings?

problem solved

xavier gave me a number of a support line that was open at this time of night.

they said the last sim update had fucked up, and resent it.... 30 secs later it arrives. reset the phone.

sorted.

propZ to xavier...

//edit

and seeing as this thing is selling like the proverbial shit off a shovel and someone else might encounter this problem what you wanna do is ring 156 from an orange phone... you want menu option 3 then menu option 2.

heh

that piccy sooo doesn't do it justice...

the tft has to be seen to be believed...

sharp, clear and bright... easily the equal of the tft in an XDA or an iPaq (obviously not resolution wise... but clarity)

Sorry Dave, but it *is* shit.. suprisingly enough the software is buggy as hell (you've only just got it - wait until you've had to use it for a month).

Micro$oft on my phone? Bugger that, gimme a Nokia any day.

fucking lol

right, impressions then;

i have read the reg article... and indeed i read everything they had about it, the smartphone OS, stinger phones, everything for the last few months.... i also read numerous net and magazine reviews... and i spoke to ppl (xavier) who actually have one...

points to note

1. there may well be bugs in it... i know for a fact i have not experienced several of the bugs that are mentioned on some sites - i specifically went looking for some when i got the thing...

2. initially the menu's were experiencing several seconds lag... by initially i mean the first minute or so after i turned the device on for the first time... i haven't experienced it at all since...

3. it synchronises PERFECTLY with outlook XP, the net works. the email works. msn works... in short the only thing i haven't tried - and didn't buy it for - is the camera - i never saw the point in it - i will try it, but only for a play..

you think nokias are bug free?

why exactly do you think the P800 has been delayed AGAIN? in head to head reviews of smartphone vs a P800.... neither won or lost, what does that tell you?

every one of my nokias has had bugs - hell the text messaging system on the 8310 is horrendous... the phone resets occasionally... all sorts...

T-mobile or o2 - i forget which - have had to actually RECALL the 7210!! fgs.

yeh there are some features that are missing on the SPV that should be there - but there's nothing stopping them being added in an update

overall verdict?

phone is relatively small - smaller than my 6210 which it was replacing...

screen is superb...

menu's and UI are fast 99% of the time - there is usually a few seconds delay if you change the layout of the homepage - hell my fucking desktop on the pc experiences the same thing...

keypad IS a little small - i have small fingers so it's not a problem to me - it might be to you.

T9 system is a little different to a nokia implementation - not worse... just different - i find myself making mistakes, but sue me, i've only had it a day.

battery life - i don't expect to be superb, but i've heard of 3hrs talktime as a phone and 2hrs while using gprs as accurate figures.

missing some crucial applications - like a notepad and a file explorer - but a file explorer comes on the SD card with it as a demo version.

out of the box experience is one of the better ones i've seen - phone comes with docking station, uk and international mains adaptors & lead, case, handsfree kit, digital camera, 8mb SD card, full version of outlook 2000 & activesync software which works with older and newer versions of outlook.

um don't think there's anything else really to be said... except grem, do you have one? have you played with one extensively...? no. don't believe everything you read on the net... it's not the buggy piece of shit you think it is... try reading a less extremist review, say from PC pro magazine.

I don't even have a mobile. A phone small enough for my ego is too big for my budget.:mad:

I dunno if I really want a Mobile and a PDA in one, I'd prefer to have the two connected via bluetooth

Right now this is having money saved up for it

So what does an Orange SPV look like?

orange_spv.jpg

Pros:

* Very fast, ideal for pursuit.
* Owner qualifies for Spectrum roadside support service, with optional Angel Interceptor rocket strike option.
* Price includes a years free tax and tank of petrol.
* Better than Scarlet's stupid little red "hot hatch", this has MISSILES !
* Pure Angel fanny-magnet.

Cons:

* WTF ! The damn drivers seat is on BACKWARDS !
* Pointless tracked mechanism at the rear.
* Moveable aerials - who the heck needs those ???
* Spectrum symbol is a bit gh3y.
* No optional luggage rack.
* Sample vehicle had seat covered in blonde hairs, not sure if Destiny Angel or Captain Blue.

heh

i was wondering what was with all the captain scarlet references... i forgot all about that.

anyway, i TOO would like a PDA - mobile phone combo... but by the time i'd have bought a phone with bluetooth and a pda i'd have spent about 4-5 times the amount of money the SPV cost me (£60 apres pre-ordering and haggling - and i picked up a philips standalone dvd player from the orange shop for £40 - which is ~£120 in dixons)

4-5 times the amount of money for TWO devices to carry around in stead of one? with marginally more functionality? fuck off.

Well rumour has it that we will see an ipaq like I posted minus the wireless antenna and plus a gsm aerial so that it can be used as a phone. Which would then give them that cheap price that you get from a subsidised 1year contract

I heard that there is a new machine due out soonish that uses the latest MS operating system, that will retail at about £120.
Anybody know anything about it?

I ask because I can justify £120 quid on a toy, but not £300/£400.

ah

you've heard those rumours too....
but i also read that it's supposed to be a very CHEAP one. and i don't mean in the monetary expense sense...

i wouldn't bet on it being any time soon anyway.
