The latest version has full 1080p support up to profile 4.2, has played all my samples perfectly so far. Finally a killer app for homebrew, now they just need to develop it up to XBMC levels.

Probably is, at least until the next gen comes out that force you to buy that one..

Yeah I think if not now then certainly within a couple more versions of Showtime. You will need a pre-3.56 PS3 though, new consoles will be shipping with 3.56 and newer firmware which have not yet been hacked and made downgradeable.

Nothing beyond 1080p is going to be needed for at least half a decade and quite possibly more, the PS3 is quite capable of that and so it will make an excellent media system now that we have a way of getting full codec support and quite possibly a ton of extras like what we get with XBMC.

Exactly what I was thinking - that would tempt me to retire my old model ps3 and make it a pure media server.

Well I just got my PS3 and I'm tempted to just use it as a media server because it's running 3.40. Need to get my brain in gear though and read some of the guides out there. It's a shame that the PS3 scene is such an ugly mess of ugly sites. The sites for the Wii were all nicely laid out, consistent and really easy to understand.
