I was reminded of an article I once read about why people like spicy food. It mostly comes down to the fact that there's this stuff in chilli's called capsicain - it's the hot stuff and it does actually physically burn. The buring releases endorphins (which are naturally occurring opiates, related to morphine) that have both an analgesic (pain killing) and euphoric (happy! happy!) effect.
Ultimately, then, eating spicy food is a bit like taking smack.
I'll have to remember that as a colleague (who's over in the UK for the week, but resides in New Mexico) has just given me a jar of "Pueblo, all natural, indian summer salsa", which professes to be "Hot! Hot!".
