Im thinking of getting one because of the size of the screen, was wondering whether anyone here has any experience with them, mainly for consoles and watching TV (duh)

Any opinions would be welcome.

If you don't get the viewing angle correct, the picture looks dark/patchy.

I'd be more inclined to get a slightly smaller plasma because i've seen some amazing plasmas but every rear projection telly i've thought "looks shitty".

Its an old technology, that will be obselete within the next 5 years or so. I'd wait another year, and buy a plasma, or something else you can hang on your wall.

Isn't playing games bad for rear projection sets? Damages the screen or something.

If you pause it yeah, ala screenburn.

I know this viewing angle stuff is relevant but as long as i can view it from 45' it wont matter. Just looking for a nice set with crisp picture and i have seen them before just cant remember what it was.

Budget is around £1200 if that helps, hence putting plasma out of my range for now

You would be better off just getting a large standard TV screen, something from Toshiba, etc.

Tah Adams, those do indeed look the part :) I shall have a looksie at them.

ATM i got 2 Sony 29" Supertrinitron standard TVS (really nice) and i am selling them and using my own money to bump up the rest i need.

I am looking at rear screen projectors as I am so used to huge screen but now widescreen and unless its the same height in picture ill be very annoyed.

I have been looking at this for about a year and have had a look at the picture several times as this one is always on display at the leicester store and its amazing.... Its still a lot of money and not sure whether i can warrant spending 2k on a television..

I've found the vast majority of Rear Projection TV's appauling quality. Even with Sky Digital, it looks like an analogue picture. If you're sitting in a pub, approximately the other end of the building it seems to look ok.

I've also been told Plasma Screens require a dedicated nuclear power plant to run and is apparently noticable on electricity bills.

As a stop-gap until plasma prices come down, a RPTV is fine.

You can get a good one for about a grand these days which will serve you well for a couple of years when, hopefully, plasmas will be of a much better quality and lower price.

I did think about doing the above but decided that and will likely go straight to plasma soon.

Thought it was screenburn while playing not just when paused. Due to the fact that little changes on the screen in most games, the same lthings are constantly being drawn in the same place on the screen.

As for quality, my uncle has a huge priecy rear projection TV, and the picture quality is awful.

Plasma's are over priced and over rated, on image terms at least.

The only reason for getting a larger TV is so you can sit further away from it. If you have a 32" w/s set, and upgrade it to a 42" plasma, and sit at the same distance, you're might get better contrast and improved colour, but you certainly will also get reduced resolution.

You're still looking at the same old 575 lines whether you have a small tv or a big tv.

Its also worth noting that colour encoding comes very far down the list of priorities in the PAL system, the quality is very very low.

My rear projector 52" has a cracking picture and is visible from any angle on the side and about 30 degrees up and down the picture quailty is top notch on the xbox and DVD's are amazing (like the cinema with beer and a pause button). the only bad thing is i have to close the blinds on really sunny days if im playing the xbox but normal TV is ok.

Yes a plasma is better but stay away form these cheap samsung peices of crap the contrast on them is crap aparently they have no tuner and are just basicaly cheap crap.

p.s try and get a 100hz version it seems to make a big diffrence
