Quake 1 brightness

I'm trying to relive my eary years playing Q1. Anyone know how to get the game brighter with a Radeon card (9700 pro)?
I tried gamma in the console and that doesnt work and changing the settings for game gamma or brightness in display propertiers doesnt seem to do much.

yeah fuhquake is the way to go tbh! nice new textures and all!
