I have to agree, the "retro" look is basically crap. I know its meant to fit in with the idea of it being a games site but it really doesnt work. It looks like something created in 10 minutes.

I've tried to im[prove up[on it many times, but it ends up being crap and/or cliched.

not like the current one isn't, but their are only so many games characters you can have in a logo without throwing up

You can only post a link after a certain number of posts. Another legacy of the ****** problem.

"if less is more, think about how much more more would be."

No, more is more clutter. Design is all about simplicty. Taking away instead of adding.

"And less? You just removed a few dots and the 'press start' thing."

No I just tidied up the edges of the logo, wtf is up with those non-aliased rounded corners...and used a decent font. It looks 1,000x better. (trust me on this, I get paid a hell of a lot to do this for a living)

If the site isn't about graphics, then why include them in the first place?

I did read some of the articles, if you'd bothered reading my other comments - they're hard to read because the paragraphing, grammar and general style are a little bit hard to grapple with...

"developers keeping up with hardware" is hardly an "alternative" view is it?

Why not do something even wilder and start another GTA vs Gun Control debate.

:\

I mean this in a nice way, but the first thing you should do is move your website off Geocities and onto some proper hosting. Second thing to do is to neaten it up a bit. You may like it, but it doesn't look that nice. Its OK when its all shrunk down on a high resolution screen, but the 800x600 (I think thats my work resolution) it looks pretty poor.

I plan to move it off geocities soon - I've bought a new domain name (power-off.co.uk), and a new design will ensue, along with new logo.

It'll improve, i promise.

I dont think you need game characters in the logo. That sort of looks kiddy. Just make it sharp and modern looking. The barrysworld logo is a good example. Nothing to snazzy but bright and bold, looks funky. :)

A friend of mine made this site in a very short amount of time using php and photoshop. I think it looks pretty good considering the little time it took.

I am going to try something new with the next site I make, incuding the new logo.

It may not work, But it's worth a try.

I'll tell you when it's done.

Nice looking, very nice looking, but at quite a cost for size and 'browsability' .. i'm on 1mbit ADSL and it takes a good 10 secs to load a page. Good job he has decent hosting ;)

I've been reading through and you have a consistent theme based around how brilliant you feel you are and how your opinions are 'right'. I've quoted a few examples:
We still want to entertain you with out[sp] literary prowess, inform you with our in depth knowledge of gaming and try to change your opinions
I hope you are as pleased as I am that Power-off has such brilliant writers working for us.
read the articles and think about what we say. It'll all make sense in the end.
Cut this! You're aim seems to be to present articles from an alternative perspective. This is good, but let the readers be the judge. Don't ram your views down my throat please as I'm likely to vomit. Or hit the 'back' button.

I've tried everything now, and it always seems to be 'offensive' to somebody.

i tried being modest, it was patronising

i tried being in the middle, again, it was patronising

i tried being confident and it's over confident.

i'm really poor at writing 'links'

OK, some friendly tips.

Firstly, with regard to the website design, spend more time on it than you currently are. You've churned out an entire new design in a day? Spend a week, 2 weeks - get it *right*.

Additionally, come to our lovely chummy WebDev forum, since we're happy to help out with tips on the technical side of things.

Colourschemes take practice, though there are utilities out there which can generate "tasteful colours" based on the first colour you give it. Again, someone in webdev may be able to link that.

And, with regards to writing: Try to be delibrately objective, especially in your site introductions, don't write as if you're speaking, you can't emphasise words nor abuse grammar in the same way when you write - you need to approach it differently. Play around, don't try and impress anyone, don't try and sound cool, don't "big up" yourself, and you can avoid "talking down" to the reader, by not "talking" to them at all. If it comes out sounding dry and faceless, then you can tweak it, but it's easier to add "personality" later if really necesary, than to try and take it out.

Hope that helps.
