Need advice away from DAoC

More and more my RL comes in the way of my play time and I find that it is just not worth it playing DAoC anymore, as the game is heavily biased against the casual gamer.

As a result, when I log I end up soloing most of the time, because otherwise, by the time I find a group I must log off, etc. The game is no longer enjoyable.

On the other hand, this is my first MMPORG and I have to say that I just love the feeling of community this game has, so I'm reluctant to go back to basic off-line games.

I know nothing about all this: who could recommend me a good online game that would be enjoyable even for a casual gamer ?

Until I find an alternative I'll stick to DAoC.

Thanks for your help.

it would probably be better to check things of as NOT being very good for the casual gamer.

in general MMORPG games are steered towards the no-life who sits in his chair 23 1/2 hours a day.

Duh , pick a easy to level solo character and go the BG's, don't be ashamed, that's what they're for.
You don't need to group in BG's, in fact solo really improves your skills and lets you stay there longer.

Only know Hib characters really, Enchanters solo with ease, so can certains types of Elds, just make any character a pure levelin machine and don't worry about nerfing yourself, try a bladed spec bard , push one spec on any character and see how it does, there is much less pressure to be group useful in the BG's.

In the chaos of BG, anything goes.

DAOC is the most casual-user friendly MMORPG out there unfortunately... something like EQ you'll never get anywhere in unless you can group and play for 24 hour stretches.

Maybe just play some alts - don't pin your enjoyment on hitting 50 in no time at all.. see if you can rearrange RL things to maybe play less over all, but get it in slightly larger chunks (rather than playing for an hour 5 times a week, play for 5 hours once a week)

As for other games, maybe a text based mud :) similar community spirit, less pretty graphics ;) should be able to find something casual that doesn't require grouping with people or being on for hours at a time..

If there was a Roleplaying server, you'd be happy...
Level advancement and so on isn't so important then.
but unless you get a US account, you're out of luck as there's no RP Euro server..

hehe finally found a soulmate :p

i got exactly the same problem, i have been playing q3a longer than i have played daoc, and now, when i am tired of daoc (can happen sometimes) i go play q3a again.

anyhow, i found that it helps if u set ur goals lower. for example, instead of saying to urself 'i want lvl 50!' say smth like 'i want lvl 30' in the beginning, when u reach it, u can always raise ur goals :)

When am not in the mode for DAoC,
Or don't want to go around looking for a group for ages,

FPS are always good,

I usally play the Delta Force: Black Hawk Down demo great fun,

Also, there Online/Off-line RPGs,

Like Never Winter Nights, (damn 3rd editon)
Also, War-Craft 3 is really good, surpream Single player,

and the Online Action is great, The RPG's you can download for it are Great, when there 8 of you,

As Battle-Net system very good, for getting a group together and some RPG fun :)

Or, you can wait for World Of WarCraft like me

Casual?

Any diablo player can tell you, SFXman, me..heh...that D2 especially is good for a real hardcore 16h without sleep session or just two levels in 10 minutes.

Then we have small games like Continuum. It's, if you ever played Starcontrol, like melee in that. Small pixel ships fighting eachother...loads of fun for just 15 mins to even hours.

Then we have our RTS, Starcraft being one of the best simply because blizzard does have this thing called "Battle.net"

Also Starcraft/Broodwars(extension) only costs, nowadays, 20 euro most(?)

I can dig up the Continuum for you..just gimme a sec.

And here it is

Actually DAoC is not to bad for the casual gamer, Ive been playing since retail and my chars are still only in the 30s.

As mentioned above I do three things.

1) a char thats ok solo, for when you can play for maybe just an hour.

2) the abilty, once a week or so to get a 3 hour stint in. Any solid grp play of 3 hours will get good xp, best part of a level.

3) a BG alt, so that you can do the best bit (play against other players) without hitting 50

I'd also suggest...

4) a guild that dont mind slackers!! :p Some guilds just wont accept a player who wont commit to them first RL second :p

Finally take it easy and your lower expectance levels as your not gonna own anyone for a very long time. Don't worry about it, I know I don't!

Counter-Strike :D

But that is mainly highly enjoyable if you play it in a friendly community. Like in denmark we have www.csworld.dk, tho it has been plagued by inactivity for a while cause the servers have been alggy (Something about a bad router at host).

I find FPS games online can be alot of fun for the casual gamer, but it can also be very unpleasant if you don't hang with the right kind of people.

You could allways go for a game like Neverwinter Nights, it's decent fun in multiplayer but could require alot of time if you become part of a hardcore RP group so dunno.

EA Sports will be releasing their 2003 titles these comming months, so you could either just go headtohead in online matches or perhaps even join an online league in some of them, dunno their full potential yet tho, but a casual gamer should be able to get some fun from them.

And, eventho they're not online games I'd highly recommend you check out MAFIA and Hitman 2, those games rule. If you're more of a RPG'er, try Divine Divinity or Morrowind out.

Utopia - you only have to log in once every 48 hours ... the more the better, like most games, but once 24 is enough, once every 48 is a little low, but enough!

and there are lots of things to do if you have a day with alot of sparetime

http://www.games.swirve.com/utopia - and its free

Then there is FPS like Q3 CS and alike ... but saying community in CS ... well aggreesive once yes, and its purple for a newbie :D

I played Planetarion and Dominion and no thank you! No more waking up at 5am to defend the galaxy or to strike out..nope..never again. It ruins your life! If you have one...or ruins your previous life as an emu.
