My computer is slowly commiting suicide on me :(.

What is happening, is on my desktop these 'shortcuts' keep popping up. Its hard to explain, so I'll try and get a picture.

They are 6 shortcuts, possible from the internet (though they still come up if I'm not connected to the internet), that keep refreshing. As I log onto my username, there is 6 on there, and then after 10 secs, another 6 come up after, and again and again ><.

The annoying part is they are not deletable, and just ruins my desktop. You can still click on them, and it links you to a website.

I have tried restarting my laptop, and tried to use system restore to restore it to an earlier date. The problem started today, and even though I've restarted my computer 5+ times, it still happens.

I think my computer hates its life and wants to end it :m00:

Try start > run > msconfig. Then go through services and autostart and see if its some wierd shite there. After you unchecked everything you don't want just restart it and see if its gone.

then don't stop it!

best thing to do (for most problems anyway)

1) reinstall Windows and have the ServicePack ready

2) patch it with the SP

3) make an image of your drive

4) install your drivers, apps and everything you need

5) make an image

if something odd happens, just put the image over it.

btw, best to have a seperate drive ~10gb for your OS alone (10gb to be safe, but ~4gb atleast)

P.S. "Acronis True Image" is pretty easy to use. An other one you might want to take a look at is "Drive Image", haven't tried it myself yet though.

He said: reinstall Windows, patch it up and install all the neccessary drivers etc., then create a DVD image of your Windows installation (preferably on a separate partition so you won´t have to delete any data) which you can then use as a backup in case something´s messing up your Windows. :)
Pretty good advice in my books.

However, some of those viruses tend to infect all partitions of your machine, so deleting/reinstalling your boot resp. Windows partition isn´t always enough.

download Adaware and run it,should get rid of the shortcuts

Yup, Search&Destroy and Adaware as well as CW Shredder should help a lot. Oh.. and try to avoid "those sites"... you know.. the ones with all the .jpg´s. :)

You have a virus or a virus like piece of adware. Get onto a computer that has an internet connection but is not affected by these shortcuts and go to Google. Type in the names of the shortcuts and you should get search results from Anti-virus software websites, one of them will have these shortcuts down as being linked to a certain virus and it will then give you details on how to rid yourself of it. Once its gone then run windowsupdate and apply the critical patches.

Didn't seem to work. Tried quarantining everything that came up (400 files), and although it did delete the current ones on the desktop, after it finished and shut down, they started coming up again.

Try running a CWS shredder http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/cws/

Basically its spyware that is almost impossible to get rid of (if you don't know what it is) and hijacks your web browser or desktop.

Tried to install it and it crashed on me.. will try again tommorow.

The attachment is what the actually shortcuts look like, and they totally take over my desktop (the space which isn't already taken by my other shortcuts for Rubbish Bin and DAoC)

had it for years and cba to get rid of it. adaware etc would remove it all but when i restarted it would just reinstall itself... either from hidden folder or dl again off net. i think it must have been off the net because i finnaly stopped it all when i installed zone alarm. because my old pc had nothing wht so ever in the wy of being able to defend itself... thats how old it is heh.
but yeah. check ur firewall is working to imo.

I had those, only popped when I used Internet Explorer though, might sound odd, but I stopped using IE for anything and ran 1 Adware... never seen them since... (before that, I had removed with Adware just like you, but each time I used IE for anything, they would instantly repop)

I have MSNplus as well, as someone else said, so might also be helping the evil :(

Got this a few weeks ago when i accidentaly opened a attached file on some spam i intended to delete, but hit open instead, then all shit broke out on my desktop and rest of comp. Did a symatec online check it found the virus in 5 min. Downloaded the removal tool and it started to work and took 50 min for it to fix the virus and all the folder/desktop icons it created a total of 24 gb. But after removing it all was working as normal.
