Microsoft Project 2003

Not a Daoc thread, but I tend to find useful information on these boards:

We are a small company of about 10 people, broken down into several groups:

-Office Manager
-Project Managers
-Analysts

We are using Windows SBS 2003, and want to get a Project management system up and running; preferably Microsoft Project 2003.

However, there is SO much confusion about the different aspects of this software, I need clear answers from someone who isn't trying to flog me the wrong products. Different companies give me different software requirements - I need someone neutral!

-Project Managers need to be able to create projects, assign tasks to people.
-Analysts need to view projects, see their tasks (added to Outlook), and edit projects to show their status etc.

I need Project Server 2003...this I am clear of. What I need to know is:

-Server CALs - I need one per user, these just allow the web-based access for viewing? Does the web-based version allow creation of products? Editing projects? Or, does a server CAL come with a client software program? Argh!!
-Project Professional Client - Do project managers need this? Or is this a server CAL? ARGHHH.

SOME companies say I need Server 2003, 10 CAL licenses and that's it.

SOME companies say I need Server 2003, CAL licenses for analysts and Project Professional Client licences for Project Managers.

SOME companies say I need Server 2003, CAL licenses for EVERYONE and just ONE Project Professional Client license for General office manager...

I am beyond confused.

Can someone make this simple for me?!

Can't help you there Eggy, but I use the program myself. It's great for planning projects, and giving a very nice overview We use it in our small project group at uni, but we haven't had much luck useing the web-based solution, so we just tend to put it up on a server accesible for all of us and keep it update from there hehe.

But hope you figure this out, and sorry for not beeing able to help you out, but don't know much about licenses etc. since we got a "deal" with microsoft so we get alot of licenses for free to their programs ;/

I looked at the security and roles of the project server 2003 a week or so ago, as it was recently installed, although we have a 50 cal license i will ask the guys who admin it as they should know. will try and get an answer for yo this afternoon.

As i am lead to believe the web based access will allow you to edit, view and change stuff but not to create initial projects

this is not a server cal, Project professional will allow a project manager to create a project and connect to the project server.

to confuse things even more, we have a processor license which gives us an ulimited number of CALS, but looking at microsoft website and talking to the admins:

Microsoft Office Project Server 2003 Client Access License (CAL)

Project Server 2003 Client Access Licenses (CALs) are required for each device or user that accesses the features and services of Project Server 2003, for example to take advantage of Project Web Access.

also you will also need an SQL license as well.

the project pro client licence is a catch all, and will act as a server cal, so 8 users and 2 managers would need:

8 cal server licence and 2 project pro licences, which would equal a 10 user cal.

there are also various roles you can assign in project server for you these look like:

office manager - executive role
project manager - project manager or portfolio manager(multiple projects)role
analysts - team member or team lead role

here is the list of all the roles:

# Team leads
# Team member

How much functionality do you get via web access? If it's fully functional but simply lacks the ability to create projects, I need only buy a professional client for the Office Manager.

web access lets you edit tasks, assign actuals and update project status but not create projects, wouldn't say it is "fully functional" as such, as it is missing a lot of the things from project pro. if the project manager as well as the office manage need to do scheduling for projects then they will need the pro version

Project Web Access is the Web portal that enables you to connect to the project and resource information that is stored in Project Server and collaborate on projects. Team members, executives, and resource managers—in other words, anyone who needs access to Project Server 2003 information but does not require the scheduling capabilities of Project Professional—can use Project Web Access through a Web browser to view, update, and analyze information.
