Red Dwarf is one of the best sci-fi comedys ever made. Anyone that says it is shit obviously either hasn't watched them all or has no sense of humour ;)

I've watched them all, but compared to Fawlty Towers, The Office, Alan Patridge, League of Gentlemn, Peter Kays Phoenix Nights, Peep Show .... it is no match! :)

The episode with the T-rex dinosaur thingy was quite funny though.

Red Dwarf is better than all of those with the exception of (maybe) Alan Patridge and Fawlty Towers.

Still, it's down to opinion which some fucking twats just aren't able to fathom.

:/

I think its played to an audience via a projected display.

Anyway, porridge owns all of your base.

Perhaps "canned laughter" isn't quite right then - any recorded laughter (recorded before or during the show or whenever) sucks. It's just a cheap psychological trick. It makes more sense for live comedy shows or whatever but not sitcoms.

Teaches you when to laugh. Which means i can now anticipate when to laugh. I dont mind it really, just adds to the humour of the show.

Though i do have to say, the Leauge of Gentlemen is NOT funny. Just abstract.

In terms of canned laughter can anyone confirm the following for me?

I used to watch M*A*S*H years ago, on BBC2. Clearly it was not filmed infront of a live studio audience, and I don't remember it having any laughter track. I used to think it was great, the funny bits were funny and the sad bits were boring, but fortunately there weren't too many of those.

Now the program is re-running on Paramount with canned laughter, and it is almost unwatchable, this is so sad :(

No that's what I'm saying about it being a cheap psychological trick. It doesn't make it more funny, it just makes you think it's more funny because OH MY GOD ALL THOSE PEOPLE ARE LAUGHING so it MUST be funny. On shows built around canned laughter, you take it away and generally what's left is an empty, unfunny shell.
