i just sat up a little mining operation on a hill just outside bestine, 2 mineral extractions , a wind mill, and a cemical extractor..
might look abit like a mass destruction plant at first sight..
Anyhow, i noticed a pirate camp suddenly apeared just down from my mining ... operation, and wondered if those could attack my preciouse machines? luckely they are gone now tho

You're safe. The only thing that will damage your harvesters is failing to pay the maintenance.

Do i need to pay maintnanse even if i turn them off?

yup. all the time they're exposed to the elements (eg, planted in the world, not in your inventory) you have to pay maint on them or they'll start to suffer damage.
