HL2 and Doom3.

The latest release dates we had at work for both games are quite suprising.

HL2 is due on the 26th of September, as our suppliers supply a lot of other UK entertainment suppliers I doubt the would be given hugely incorrect dates.

More suprising than HL2 looking like it actually will ship before the 30th of September, is the Nov 1st 03 release date we have for Doom 3. Could ID pull off such an early release?

Probably, then fix their naughty ways with patches.

More intresting than a possible HL2 and D3 sales war will be the ati nvidia war if both titles do come out so close together. With ati having secured the hl2 bundle deal, nvidia will surely bundle a card with doom3 if they can. Should see a nice price war if it happens.

Fraid I cant bet against ATI (they may put something in my drivers, or get Spirited to net send me to death)

ATi definitely has the edge with HL2, it all about the pixel shaders baybee!

HL2 looked pretty finished bar the maps in the E3 demo, so its not a surprise to me that they're on target for the 30th.

...now where did I put that £1500 needed to upgrade my PC. :(

Yes ati will win, but hopefully they will be scared of nvidia and drasticly cut prices left right and center.

Taking pre-orders as of tomorrow at work I beleive, so I will find out the prices.

This is true but the problem is that D3 may well not be out until next year which means ATI gets the jump on Nvidia.

DIII is nowhere near the level of completion that HL2 is... hence why id have been very quiet since Valve flooded us with some serious Videos for HL2. Not to mention the Xbox HL2 video which looks almost identical to the PC version.

Pretty sure id are crapping themselves cause their game just doesn't look anywhere near as good.

I'll be buying HL2, couldn't give a toss about Doom 3. I loved Doom 1 and 2 but of course they've got fk all in common with no 3.

I found jDoom ended up pretty laggy for more than 2 players...though I think that may be the number of bells and whistles I had enabled.

Is there any way to get a dedicated server for it? My FreeBSD box isn't working hard, and I'm free tonight.

Everyone I've spoken to has been amazed by HL2.. The physics engine alone is closer to "real life" than I've ever seen in any game ever.

I will be interested to see how the AI compares, and whether or not the landscape can entirely be deformed/changed, etc as its claimed (i.e. whether the strider shooting that overpass is a scripted event, etc).

Some of the stuff that amazed me in the E3 movie was in the detail.. like when that strider blasts the overpass, the "max height sign" ends up hanging down and swinging by one cord, totally according to physics we take for granted in the real world.

Ok, I'm a sad t**t and stuff like that (being a programmer myself) amazes me.

Its kinda scary by the same token looking at HL2 since although human emulation is still a way off, in terms of physics, lighting and texturing - I don't think we're that far from systems that completely replicate real life environments (in a completely believable "cant tell the difference" sense)

....I'll shut up now.

Im with you Durzel, HL2 demo impressed me and that usually doesn't happen.

In that demo the AI shows some good signs. There is a part where the demo guy takes his man into a little room and hes being followed by the police chaps with guns, he shuts the door of the room and pushes a table in front of it so it cant be opened. There is banging on the door of the AI trying to get in but then it goes silent. All of a sudden they move along and start shooting through the windows instead. Finally they kick the door in.

I liked in the demo where he threw a grenade and the person got thrown into a car which then sounded the alarm..I'm not sure if it was scripted but the way his body got tossed like a rag doll looked really cool. ;)

Dunno - not downloaded a version for 6 months or so. GAME.net should host some imo. What do I pay my subs for ? A load of games I hate that's what :)

p.s. Might not be free tonight :/

You need to have the original Doom WADs to play it. If you don't...well, I don't have them either. I'm sure I can acquire some though.*

*From a totally legal source, obviously. I'm a vicar ffs.

Yes, these things are just marketing gimmicks.

I've ordered both games as each of them is going to have something that will be quite different that the other doesnt.
