Calm it suj.

You enter the General forum at your own risk. :p

Anyway, there was something that you had to update from M$ to ensure you had the latest version of to run it. I can't remember.

Embattle knows cos he posted a link to it.

ok cool, i'll see if i can find out :) if u find it please stick it in here. thanks! oh by the way - i'm on windows 2000 pro. that patch isn't the one for windows xp is it? i think the url for that is in the gta3 read me :m00: :D

That's right. The patch is to update the version of DirectX 8.1 that's included with XP. If you have Windows 2000 and have already installed DirectX 8.1 then you don't need the patch. Either way, this wouldn't cause the sort of problems you're having.

To repeat the question Gray asked, has it worked before and suddenly stopped working or has it been like this since you've installed it? Do any other games cause this problem? When the system 'locks' are you able to CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager or is a reboot the only thing you can do?

I have a very similar problem to you and I found changing AGP mode from x4 to x2 in the BIOS fixed the problem with no noticeable drop in performance. You might want to give that a go, but I doubt that's the source of your problem.

this game must have some major issues. on my old hd (before it went *pooof booom crackle squueeek*) changing the agp speed helped but this time doesn't seem to be working. i had an exact same prbolem on my older hd too but can't remember what fixed it.

only 1 time have i been able to ctrl+alt+del and that's usually after the game lasts 10-15 seconds. If the game locks up quicker than that - it's usally a fully fucked lock up and when i reboot, even windows doesn't try a scandisk.

So you had the same problem on your old hard drive? You say changing AGP mode helped but I take it the game still caused a full lock-up, only it lasted slightly longer than it does now?

You might want to run CheckDisk (from the properties window of your drive) just to see if there's any obvious bad sectors. Did the game install okay or were there any errors reported?

i don't remember any

only thing i got was that dx 8.1 wasn't installed (d'oh) and i don't think that installed properly either.

the story is that after it installed it, it said click ok to reboot.

so i waited a good 8 minutes for it to reboot, and i didn't get anything. so i decided to reboot it my self. wether that has anything to do with this or not i dunno.

Sounds very likely so far. Have you tried re-installing DX8.1? You might want to run CheckDisk first.

You may have duff sectors on your drive and parts of DX8.1 might have been written to these duff sectors. CheckDisk should find them and mark them as 'bad'. Reinstalling DX8.1 after that should hopefully ensure those components are written to good, healthy, well-behaved sectors. Reinstall GTA3 after that just for good measure. You won't lose your settings or saved games.

Does it only happen in GTA3?

I had a similar problem with newer computer games and found that it was my Graphics Card that was on the blink :(

Try a different Graphics Card if possible

It could well be, but I'm leaning towards a slowly fux0ring hard drive. Did CheckDisk show any bad sectors? Do you have another hard drive you could try? Install an OS, the necessary drivers and GTA3 on a separate physical drive and see if it makes any difference.

Some games don't like running on clocked chips, specially AMD's

Might be worth checking that :0)
