Generals looks very nice, though from the initial views I have seen from the videos it is very similar to graphics from Earth:2150 and GC.
Of course, the thing that has always kept me playing the C+C games is the gameplay, it's so hard to beat it. Red Alert 2, to me, is the best so far, but I have always liked the RA series better than the Tiberian one (dunno why, units are just more fun I think).
It might take a while for me to get used to 3d RTS games again (last one I really played was WZ2100) and I don't think Generals will have the same feeling/atmosphere.
But finally it's good to see WW are using TCP for the network protocol, the messing around to get TS and RA2 working on a mixed OS network is, to say the least, fun
Yeah I don't really have much good to say about this.
Like Wij said the vehicles move too slowly which makes it difficult to micro manage them in battles. And the really, really slow vehicles are painful to watch when sending em into battle. If the enemy does a sneak attack on your base it's often quicker to build a new army then retreat your forces to defend.
Also the whole game is too shallow. Tech tree is basic and kind of pointless in a way. The nukes/scuds/ion cannons have no place in an RTS in my opinion. Point and click mass destruction? Lame.
The variety of the different teams is nice. And the experience system is semi-original but doesn't bring anything new to the genre really.
Really quite dissapointing considering how much I enjoyed C&C and Red Alert
The graphics are quite good - similar to warcraft 3. It is quite fun the only problem I have with it is that its too short and that your units don't respond when being fired upon, they should return fire instead of letting people shoot them to death
This isn't C&C theres not one thing (apart from the Westwood lot making it) that ties it to that name
I liked it, but it was too short and there wasn't enough units or buildings. Plus the AI in later missions seemed to be to be dormant (US v GLA final) or a constant stream of nme units (China v GLA final)
I still haven't cracked the last China mission because as fast as you build tanks they destroy them and if you do get an army they use the scud storm they get as soon as you start the mission and it acts like a nuke even though it only contains anthrax :/
Westwood didnt make Generals, EA bought out westwood. Generals is quite shallow and rough around the edges imo, custom games and quick matchs use basically teh same interface as from ra2. Generals is just a proganda statement for the usa and plolitical issues atm.
I do like the game play, always have done in the c+c series games. Like cask said the nukes ioncannons skud storms + some of the general abilities ie point click instant destruction do make the game not as good, perhaps a more complex tech tree or limiting them to only 1 special per base.
I think the gla have a brillaint system and are quite injenous.
If it was Westwood i think it would have been finished properly, ea have done a half assed job on it.
What is to stop a rl country building only 1 of the super-weapons? Nothing, so whay stop it in game?
The only thing I don't like is the lack of the option of turning them off. Last I played a 2v1 against my flatmates, all USA, and it turned into my having a group of 20 hummers and a group of 20 choppers and running around using the Detention Centre to find and destroy all the Particle Cannons before they were activated.
Yes, I agree the game is too short, and there is no real storyline, unlike the other C&C games.
Multiplayer: Wel it has actually improved, well the AI has anyway. I can no longer take on 7 Brutals at once, the money just runs out unless I am China or USA, can't use GLA
But finally the AI actually actively hunts each other if you set them on different teams. Something that made the other C&C games hard was the fact that the AI always ganged up on you.
And no videos? Bah! I want Tanya back with her nice commando outfit!
Actually, I quite like Generals.
Yes, its smaller scale and slower that red alert. Yes, units form log-jams. But i find the single player campaigns more involving and overall it reminds me of the original C&C. To be honest, I didnt really like Red Alert, i thought they were trying to be something they werent with that, whereas Generals is a bit more how I expect a C&C game to be.
Westwood/EA/whoever the hell is making these games these days have totally lost their way since Red Alert. They seem to reckon that creating a side made entirely of specialised, over the top, stupid, unconvincing units is "novelty" and not "insanity". I mean, a tank that shoots mini nuclear warheads? Tanks that build drones? "Hackers" stealing money from the internet? Angry mobs? Even the initial income concept (go and collect all the magical supply crates that're just lying around!!!!!!!) is goddamned insane. The same problems plagued Tiberian Sun and to a slightly lesser extent RA2. Nothing meshes. Red Alert was better than the original C&C that was better than all the crap since. And starcraft is on par with Red Alert. And TA is better than them all.
