Lots of votes for Shawshank Redemption, have to say I agree completely with that, it's a fantastic film.

Also high on my list of favourites would be an obscure little space film called Silent Running (which just makes me cry every time I see it), any John Hughes 80s Brat Pack film but St Elmo's Fire in particular, classic Disney cartoons llike Snow White, Cinderella etc, all the Monty Python films, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and all 50s MGM musicals ;)

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (watched that so many times)
The Empire Strikes Back (dont really watch any of the others)
Life of Brian (Funny every single time)
Brazil (best dystopian movie. Better than Clockwork orange and 1984 put together)
Shawshank Redemption (beautiful.. great ending.. I almost cry every time)
Hudsucker Proxy (such a wonderful fairytail)
Akira ( Sheer artistry, unsettling)
The Big Lebowski (quirky offbeat, great acting, comical plot)

and I think Bowling for Columbine might just sneak in there given time.. thats one emotional movie, and really well crafted.

Thats for starters anyway.

Oh and "Nattevakten" is a great danish scary movie... Much much much better than the Hollywood version made of it. The Nightshift or something like that...

I think rocky 4 is an even more amusing propaganda movie than independence day.. The bit where Drago says 'this american is made of iron' still cracks me up to this very day..

And fight club is a brilliant movie too.. Forgot all about that.

Seriously though.. if you havn't watched charlie and the chocolate factory as an adult (or since you where a child anyway) I recommend giving it a blast.. theres stacks and stacks of political and cultural observations in there.. Just pay attention to the actions of the various nationalities, and consider at the same time that Rohld Dahl was Jewish.. it was a real eye opener for me (and Gene wilder as Willie Wonka is brilliant!)

Nothing beats the american president himself in a fighterplane fighting off ailens and the whole world starting to celebrate 4th July in propaganda level. :p

Haven't seen Charlie and the Choclate Factory. I've read the book though. Since Roald Dahl was Norwegian (born, was educated and lived in england though), I bet most Norwegians have read it and books like Matilda in school.

Yeah he was born in Wales, my bad. Mother from Oslo, but born in Hesselberg, and his father was from Sarpsborg. And he had a Norwegian citizenship. But as a writer he was very english.
