File Sharing

File Sharing. Damn It.

Finally got a modem for the "new" computer and went out trying to find a napster replacement to top up my MP3 collection with live tracks, rarities and other shit.

However, having read some of the comments on Download.com it seems that the current breed are either shit, or packed to bursting wtih spyware.

Spyware, I assume I can just block with ZoneAlarm, but it is some of the other shit like TopText that I want to avoid. (The thing that adds corperate hyperlinks into webpages without you knowing).

So, can anyone recommend something that is actually good?

Haven't got a clue mate. Don't like the spyware element of KaZaA/Morpheus, napster is gone, WinMX, Gnu* programs are also balls. I haven't downloaded songs in ages.

Thats the trouble.

Tried an OpenSource Gnutella one, but is shit slow for searches.
The only other one is AudioGalaxy - but that is also full of spyware and aparently they have started copywriting songs now....

Be warned KaZaA/Morpheus won't be around much longer due tio legal action.

Bearshare is good, it does have some spyware of a sort although you don't have to install it.

Actually, due to its person to person no-middleman nature, they claim Kazaa is impossible to close down, or at least, thats what they claim....

Thats what they claim but the other side claims its speed is down to the fact it holds lists of files like napster did.

I use Aimster.com myself and have never had a problem, in fact I find it an excellent service, i've blocked parts of from being used through ZoneAlarm, like the Buddyizer though.

I also have used BearShare which is another that can't be closed down due to there being no central server. It scans loads of servers and once connected you can download what you want. But I found it a bit of bastard when unable to find any servers and it was worryingly "bare" (wasn't that a good joke) to security hazards from my experience and hearings.

I use KaZaA and deal with the spyware elements by clearing them out with Ad-Aware.

Direct Connect is another option. Fewer users and the proggys less user friendly but has better content tham most.

Who cares if its shut down? The entire 'community' will just hop to another program, just like they did previously with Napster (which was infact, rather a shitly coded program)

Roll on the next program :)

WinMX is a ghastly tool, constructed by an ape with a filofax, I imagine. I shudder at the thought of it.

My weapon of choice is BearShare. Hardly ever have probs with it, and while it does include spyware you have the option not to install it during the setup process.

Besides, if you're still paranoid about spyware you could always install the excellent Ad-aware.

Morpheus is good, but they never thought to make a Linux client...And it wont run through wine because it's Explorer based or something :/

Limewire? That's for gnutella innit? Gah, indeed!
There's a kazaa Linux client, but it's rather shite, with the search option increadabley basic, and rather quirky with its results, and the real bad point is that the actual downloads just crawl. Now slowdownloads i can put up with, but when something is going that slowly(and everything seems to), then i'd say it's a problem with the program.

Plus, they didn't make it open sourced...Which makes you wonder.
