CPU welding question (seriously! )

Ok in one of my older pcs I have a 2.6 ghz p4 chip. The problem is the CPU has becomes fused to the heatsink! I guess this is a result of a bad thermal compound combined with a badly designed and ventilated case. Anyway does anyone have any ideas for removing the CPU from the heatsink? Suprisingly every thing functions fine (This PC acts as my BB) just interested to know if there was a way to get it off it. The side effect of having them welded together is that the CPU and heatsink have to be physically pryed from their socket as the CPU release lever is covered by the heatsink and isnt accesible, Im pretty repeadtely doing this will eventually cause damage to the MOBO and CPU.

if its not broken dont fix it!

if you DO need to get it off, id suggest a thin chisel or a strong razor blade and a bit of leverage - CPUs are pretty tough, you have to work hard to actually damage them (as long as you keep away from the pins)

Why would you repeatedly remove the cpu? :eek7:

Run a processor intensive program(like prime95), for about an hour to warm up the cpu/hs and anything in between.

Then switch off the PC and use something slim like a credit card to slide between the cpu/hs. Try to twist the heatsink aswell. It should come off easier when it's warm. Clean both, the cpu and hs with isopropyl alcohol if you have it, or even nail varnish remover - as a last resort :p

use some thermal paste before you replace the hs on the cpu.

If they are welded together you will find its working as intended it means the heat disipation from the cpu is fine.

If your not getting temperatures in excess of 120 degrees or so :) then i would just leave it as it is i wouldnt keep prying it on and off the motherboard because you might not damage the cpu but your more than likely going to wreck the motherboard breaking the connections inside it.

If its not broke dont fix it.
