Thanks, Do you have an email address or ICQ number? So that I can contact you and talk more in depth about what i'd like vs what can be done

Thanks for your help.

Just a quick message/advertisement/want ad
smile.gif

A few friends and I are in the process of starting a new Quake 2 Team Deathmatch league (Q2BATTLEUK) and I'm currently working on the website, which is most important as it will list all members, will be where clans sign up and will list upcoming games and results of past matches.

I figure the best way to catalouge all this data is to use a database, and in order to fill a page with info from such database's would require ASP code, which, unfortunatly, i can't do
frown.gif

So, assuming that we'll be able to talk someone at Barrys into letting us use some ASP, is there anyone out there who'd like to 'co-webmaster' this site, to help with the DB and ASP work? You will no doubt need to know somthing about ASP, VB, SQL and MS-Access (not asking much, am I?!).

If you are such a person (hope so

) Please contact me at the address below and i'll get back to you, probably the same day.

Thank you.

i know ASP/SQL, it's a doddle. i'm willing to help where i can.

good luck getting Barrys to host you tho. i moved my site to PQ as Barrys couldn't offer ASP support. maybe they can now, i dunno.

mail me about it. if you write the HTML and let me know what ASP support you require, i can add the code you need.

I'm an ASP programmer, most of my work is in working with databases (from both access and MSSQL server), and I'd be glad to help.

If you're interested, my ICQ is 8287632

And now to the important question, How the hell to we persuade Barrys to let us have .asp, or how hard/easy is it to get hosted at planet quake?

Shovel mate, forget PQ, i seriously doubt they'd host us, and in any case you have to have a *Fully Working* site up already, so the ASP would have to come from someone else. Seeing as it will be a Q2 League and should be popular im sure BW could make an exception for us

I had a quick check to see if my server supports ASP, unfortunately it doesn’t, the server has to be running on NT.

Although the server does support mSQL / PHP and SSI. You also get your own CGI bin and personal FTP server if that helps? (And a bunch of other stuff)

OH!! And the funky URL of http://yoursite.grimnoir.com

This offer of free hosting is open to any gaming related site or clan site. It would be nice for the hostee (is that a word?) to already have some content to put up, but its not strictly necessary, just give me a good description of what you want to do.

Mail me at: grimnoir@grimnoir.com

P.S. More info can be found at the url bellow.

You say that this host (is it your stuff?) is running NT and yet doesn't support ASP? Is the server running IIS4? (Internet Information Server) If so, ASP shouldn't be a problem to get running, if not supported already.

And i cant see why they'd allow somthing dodgy like CGI but not somthing fairly harmless (could be wrong
smile.gif
) like ASP

I'll go have a peek anyhow, thanks

Oooo ASP can be dangerous. ASP is not allowed, except on certain very trusted sites, simply because there is no way of seperating out the exeution space of the ASP application, whereas with CGI we can. It's a webserver safety issue, and I would be very surprised if any hosting service allowed ASP 'out of the box'...

Grim: stop trying to poach on the BW web-board!!!

Yes, hosting has been held up. It'll be bigger and so much better you have no idea.
Killmachine: you may want to hold off just a little bit, or better yet - email me a detailed plan of what you intend to do... We may be able to do business.

Cheers Cro (didn't know you we're in charge of the BW hosting

)

I'd love to email you a plan of what i want to do, the trouble is, i know NOTHING about ASP, i have people in to do that side of things, all i know so far is that it will be using 4 databases, is that any help to you?

No, im not asking you to set somthing up
smile.gif
I would just like to know if it could be done by BarrysWorld when the time comes (probably about a month before i upload somewhere)

Thanks again.

No, what I meant was 'what do you want to do in terms of organisation', not in terms of ASP - we have the skillz to create league bookling and control systems if you let us know what your ideas for running the league and tracking results are.

A month is a good time frame - our l33t league bookings coder is doing his exams at the moment

And the BW Hosting thing? It's new, and not really advertised yet...

out of interest Cro, i have my web site at PQ, they give me (and all other "hostees" i guess) ASP support. i dunno how they've got things set up, but there is no way i can do anything outside my own subdir. maybe you should chat to them about how to set this sorta thing up at barrys??

Well, after what cro's said I think I'll go with Barrysworld
smile.gif

So you'd actually be interested in helpinh out with the actual coading! Excellent, shall i email you with the design? actually design isn't the word, i just know what the ASP/DB will have to do, not how it will do it!

Thanks again m8

KillMachine:
What I mean is send us your ideas and we may be able to help you out. A lot fo leagues are run here on BarrysWorld, and we're in the process of re-evaluating what we do and what we can offer besides Game Servers, the booking system and league/ website hosting. So yeah - email me what you hope to do and we'll see if we can be of mutual help!

Peej:
Want to come home? Hmmm???

PS: The PlanetQuake thing? Yes, ASP can be made available to hosted sites, but as I said, it is dangerous. I managed to crash the webserver using a piece of code that does actually work... So ASP that is in use is thoroughly tested before it goes live - well, most of the time
